Headed to the library tomorrow and intend to use the ten item limit!

What should I pick up that's not fantasy or sci-fi related? I've been reading nothing but those for the last year and need something fresh!

You smell that? Do you smell that? ...Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed for twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory.

Uggghhh.

Sad book. Sad movie, too.

Should've done something, but I've done it enough
By the way your hands were shaking
Rather waste some time with you

Should've said something, but I've said it enough
By the way my words were faded
Rather waste some time with you...

The Blank Slate by Steven Pinker. it's a Psychology book and the language is pretty academic, but it's a good read.

I've either read or seen performed every Shakespearean play.

Haven't read much of his poetry, though. But I've never been one for poetry.

If you can find a good translation, the Song of Roland.
Red Badge of Courage
Horatio Hornblower series is pretty spiffy.
If you can stand it, Milton's Paradise Lost.
If you haven't read it for school, Death of a Salesman.

If you are really bored, try picking up some of essays and writeing from Enlightment age thinkers/writers. Locke, Voltiare , Montesquieu, and so on..Can be dry, but if you can, the stuff they do write about is pretty spiffy, I found Locke spiffy cause after reading his stuff, alot of things about the government made a great deal more sense.

The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

If you want to read something different try Johnny Got His Gun. That has to be the saddest, most disgusting book I've ever read. Very deep reading that will change the way you think about things.

BTW: Lord of the Flies is written by William Golding.

There's a King on a throne with his eyes torn out.
There's a Blind Man looking for a shadow of doubt.
There's a Rich Man sleeping on a golden bed.
There's a Skeleton choking on a crust of bread.

It r too late now, but Without Remorse by Clancy, which is probably my favorite book. Based in Vietnam era about a ex-Navy SEAL getting some revenge, but also a rescue in Vietnam. Also the Fifth Profession, which I forgot who wrote, and someone is borrowing my copy...But it's about an Executive Protector, basically a very good body guard, and how he thought he saw someone die...but they didn't. Hard to summarize, but a great book.

Turtledove is Sci-Fi, kinda..

Civil war with an Uzi thrown in here and there..

The Ten Thousand, Michael Curtis Ford
Ressurection Day, Brendan DuBois

The first, is one I'm readin at the moment.. slightly anachronistic view of the greek warriors.

The other, is one that I read last week. Its a what if, on if Kennedy hadnt been killed in Dallas, and the cuban missile crisis hadn't ended so nicely.

Oh, and for amusement..

Jimmy the Wags, by James Wagner.

True stories about a private detective, and some of his more interesting cases. Not a novel, but great toilet reading. the stories all balance to the right length.
