I need to give my parents gift ideas.

I couldn't decide what to get when it came to me: I can use Christmas money to buy a PS2, which will open plenty of gift ideas.

So, now I'm trying to come up with some good games to ask for. If you own a PS2, list your favorite or a few of your favorites (keep it short) and which genre they belong to.

Don't even bother listing GTA:Vice City because the media seems to have completely destroyed any chance that my parents would accept it (even though this will be my 17th birthday) .

I have, like, two games for my newly-bought (like, yesterday) PS2, and one of them is GTA:VC, and the other is FFX.

Uh, take your pick, I guess.

I just spent
my last cent
purchasing this poverty.

Devil May Cry- Action

This game is FUN FUN FUN. Plus, it has swords.

Devil May Cry 2- Action

I haven't seen this game first-hand yet, but from what I've seen on Electronic Playground/other stuff, it looks like even MORE fun.

Final Fantasy X

Pretty much the greatest cinematic RPG ever made. In the newest iteration of FF's combat system, your characters will advance using the Sphere system, acquiring skills by unlocking them on a "path" which branches out as they earn experience. Furthermore, the graphics are simply stunning. That's all I can really say about them. STUNNING.

This time around, a talented athlete's (Tidus) city comes under attack by a powerful entity called Sin, transporting him to the world of Spira.
Sin has besieged Spira for a millenium; the world's only ray of hope are summoners, who (as their title suggests) summon powerful spirits to combat Sin and its minions. Tidus is allowed to join the summoner Yuna's entourage as one of her guardians in the hope that he can return home by finding Sin.

Devil May Cry

A fast-paced, highly stylized action game. Your character (Dante) is the descendant of a demonic creature called Sparda, who rebelled against his masters and saved the human world from enslavement. With daemonic blood, Dante is able to combat powerful enemies with his sword and custom made handguns. You can pull some pretty cool tricks with your sword, jump off walls, and with the right equipment, briefly turn into a devil with unique attacks.

My only serious complaints are:

- Some boss encounters border on the impossible.
- Camera acts weird during a few action sequences.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

You almost can't own a PS2 without buying this one.

Hideo Kojima's newest opus pits Solid Snake against former FOXHOUND operative Revolver Ocelot (at first... mwa ha ha). As the mission progresses, Raiden Snake uncovers a revelation about the US government and must destroy a weapon even more powerful than Metal Gear. I'd tell you more, but it would take six hours to explain and spoil the whole story for you. Plus, I'd have to kill you.

The player has a bazillion options and there are lots of little details that make the game a fair simulation of "tactical espionage action." So unlike the previos MGS, the guards will notice when you shoot them in the back of the head

But be warned: Hideo Kojima is actually a frustrated, wannabe movie director, and there are literally three times more scripted sequences than play time.

SOCOM: US Navy SEALS

Okay, now I know I've been giving this game a lot of grief... but it's really a lot of fun. Honest!

There's not much story going on here. You'll play the leader of a SEAL fireteam called upon to impede (and eventually eliminate) several terrorist cells.
While you don't have as many options as in, say, MGS2, the game really does reward patience and a bit of tactical thinking. Sometimes this is annoying (frickin' temple at Hohn Kaen), but more often than not it's really cool, and will even start to come naturally.
In the mission I'm on now, for example, I found myself cautiously approaching a potential sniper nest, creeping around in the shadows and dashing into cover instead of just barging right through the door. That's a good way to get iced, ya know?

Now that I'm more accustomed to the control scheme (or the one I'm using, anyway; there are two options), my only major complaints are the tedium of some missions, and the
GOD DAMNED CHEAPASS RIFLE BUTT. Ahem.
If the mission is failed for any reason (primary objective failed, player character is incapacitated, fire team is wiped out), you have to start over from the very beginning. When you're playing a half hour long mission, this can start to get really old really fast.
As for the rifle butt... it's a melee attack which is instantly fatal and guaranteed to hit, even from the front of the target.
Hmmm.

Sadly, I have yet to make full use of the on-line component (no on-line support! d'oh!)... but the game also comes with free headphones! In singleplayer, you can hear radio messages and give commands over the radio.
Yeah, you heard right, mac. You can give commands to the AI verbally. KICKASS!

Thank you, everyone who answered.

I'm thinking about asking for FFX and Kingdom Hearts, at least. Since I have MGS2: Substance for Xbox I probably won't request MGS2 on PS2 since I've heard they're mostly the same.

My dad asked for a list of 5 games, though.

Gran Turismo 3
Best racing game ever made. Nuff said.

Metal Gear Solid 2
If you have a lot of time to play it, there's tons of cutscenes... tons...

FFX
Because you just have to play it. Good graphics, and nifty in-battle character switching ability.

If you can't get Vice city.. get gta3.

Eh, rent MGS2 anyway.. You can compare the slowdown on the Xbox.

While KH is a great game, sometimes it can be confusing if you haven't played all the others yet (7, 8, 9, X), but it doesn't detract from it.

Oh, and there's always dark cloud.. Diablo type randomly created dungeons, neat weapon system (Though it uses a repair system.. eww.) and a great geomod mini-thing makes it fun.. Basically, you go through the dungeon and collect "Atla".. parts of the world sealed away when the big mofoing evil dude came. You place the atla (Houses, fences, etc.) around a terrain.. Specific people have requests, like "Don't put me next to HIM!" or "I wanna be near this guy" or whathaveyou.
I can't think of any more.

Just tell them that there is no nudity, just some skin (like in any game. ) animated blood (No, if you shoot someone in the head with a rifle, it doesn't dissapear..) and various humour. And that beating people up/getting a hooker to blow you is not the main objective of the game.

By the way, I'm starting to realize I have too many games, I think.

I can't decide which game to play; I want to finish Xenogears, get better at BF1942, advance my swordsman and merchant in RO, kick mech ass in Steel Battalion, and play MGS2:Substance all at once.

And now I'm adding another system to the mess.

As a lesson in futility, I went ahead and tried to bring up the GTA thing with my dad again.

I was going over some of the stuff done when I played it at other people's houses, for instance in GTA3 when the tank code was entered and we immediately had 4 wanted stars and cops had littered the streets around us.

And his response (as it continued being) was "But then you felt you had to kill those police"

I pointed out that killing wasn't the the only thing you do; deliveries make up a certain portion of the game, too. And of course, he brought up they are drug deliveries.

So, it's mostly a lost case. I played the in-the-corner card and said that you can't really prove the game makes people do this stuff any more. He response was that if I ever went crazy and killed people he'd have to tell them I "played that Grand Theft Auto" and that he let me play it.

So, as much fun as this game looks, I don't think any amount of coaxing will make it likely that I can expect to get it.

Are there any good mech games for PS2?

Eh, I've considered that strategy for GTA (and DOA:Extreme Beach Volleyball for Xbox ), but if my parents don't want me to play around their house, I think it's pretty much their right to say so.

It's not a question of who buys it, I'm afraid, but rather who plays it and where it is played.

Jak and Dexter: The Precursor Legacy
Devil May Cry

RPG is a good genre. And I've discovered that while Wild Arms 3 IS a RPG, and a damned good one, it has a lot of puzzles.

They can be rather tricky sometimes, too. The part I like best is that you aren't just using one or two characters for them, but rather you have to use the different abilities of the different characters to solve things.

RPGs tend to make great games for purchasing due to the time they take to get through, as opposed to most platformers that dont take much time to beat, and can be easily beaten at 4 hours a day from a rental.

The series hasn't really been known for outstanding graphics. The 2D graphics from the first two really set the series apart on the Playstation and were well done. Trying to make the graphics look better for the PS2 hurt the game if anything.
