IE is crap. There is not a single thing that it does better than Mozilla or Phoenix.

Except of course the fact that it loads up faster and takes up less memory than either one.
And speaking as someone who troubleshoots browsers for a living, one TENTH as many people have problems getting IE running as they do with Netscape/Mozilla/Opera.
Which is odd because ten times more people run IE than the rest. I wonder what that tells you about those browsers...
Whatever.

I'll admit it, you got me on one. IE does take up less memory. However, it is NO faster than Mozilla, and Phoenix is definitely faster at everything. More people run IE because it's included with Windows and most people think IE is better simply because they have either never used Mozilla/Phoenix at all, or they haven't used it in years and are therefore ignorant to how good they've become. There are far more people using Windows than OS X too. There are far more people using VHS than Betamax. I could go on and on. No, people are never ignorant, how could that be?

This is another great point; if Mozilla was integrated with Windows it would take up a whole lot less memory too.

Is that a bad thing? Taking advantage of components that are already loaded into memory because they were loaded into the OS?
I'm failing to see why this makes IE crap. It's called optimisation. If you refuse to use IE and end up using a browser that doesn't take advantage of what windows already has in place, you're only gimping yourself.

The fact that people choose to use what works and works well doesn't show me that people are lazy. Fact is we get plenty of callers who call in saying they use Netscape because they dislike Microsoft. Guess what? They're the same people that tend to have problem after problem after problem. Guess those people who are lazy ended up being the smart ones after all; we don't get nearly as many browser problems with IE as we do with Netscape or Opera.

IE wouldn't work better than the newest versions of Netscape/Mozilla/Phoenix if web developers would adhere to actual standards instead of proprietary Microsoft web design. "The newest versions of Netscape" is a key phrase because I fully agree that all previous versions of Netscape are crap as well. You have to remember that most Netscape users are very likely to be stuck with an old version. However there's no reason to use Netscape at all because it's now just a commercialized version of Mozilla sans popup-blocking. I don't know much about Opera except that it isn't free as in freedom or beer and it isn't really standards compliant either, so it's no better than IE IMNSHO.

And it's not even a very good analogy because IE is no cheaper than good browsers, and there is hardly a difference between the amount of content available. Hell, even Microsoft sites work flawlessly in Phoenix. I haven't seen a site in quite a while that didn't work at all, and non-standard-compliant sites are being converted all the time.
Oh yeah, and Betamax isn't completely dead yet, it's still used in TV broadcasting, although cheap recordable DVDs and HDTV should kill it for good. [ 12-05-2002: Message edited by: adenine! ]
Is there anything I can do about this?

A sleep deprived adenine! stammered:

Some of those reasons are utterly and completely laughable; most are functions most users could barely understand, let alone figure out how to use. Let's take a look at a few :
Now tell me how the average user could even begin to make sense out of any of that.
Now, yes, Mozilla has some nice features, but I honestly dislike it because it takes up more memory when browsing, and when I ran it myself it took longer to load up pages (Especially with heavy java, XML, and other heavy effects) than IE does. I've had more people calling up complaining about corruption and bugs in the program than we ever encounter in IE, which tells me about how bad its stability is.

Vorbo Goatboy had this to say about (_|_):
I'm liking Phoenix, but I can't middle-click to get a scroll button thing like in IE.Is there anything I can do about this?
Well, because it's open source, you can download the source and edit it yourself. But if that's not an option (and I certainly don't expect it to be), I don't think you can get it. It did actually bother me for a bit before I fully converted it but I haven't even thought about it in months. You could always suggest that it be added as an option but I wouldn't count on it being integrated any time soon.

adenine! stumbled drunkenly to the keyboard and typed:

Opera is quite free, actually. If it wasn't we wouldn't encounter it at all. Mozilla is, essentially, just netscape plus a few more advanced featurse that hardly anyone uses. Phoenix, as I've said, I've never even heard of before right now; none of my customers have ever called in with it, of that I'm sure.
I have no clue what you meant by 'free as in freedom or beer'.
The reason that web developers go by proprietary Microsoft web design is the same reason why people just go with IE : It's easier. Offer people an easier alternative and they'll take it, it's just human nature. To complain because people take the easy way is pretty pointless; almost everyone does it at one point or another.

Properly handles MIME types
Properly displays content using the content type supplied by the server instead of various other incorrect things. If you're going to claim this as something IE can't, I'd like to see exactly what 'other incorrect things' IE displays in its place. Now, yes, Mozilla has some nice features, but I honestly dislike it because it takes up more memory when browsing, and when I ran it myself it took longer to load up pages (Especially with heavy java, XML, and other heavy effects) than IE does. Memory is cheap; I don't see anyone complaining about EQ being the biggest memory hog ever. What's the difference if 10-20 of the 101 reasons aren't understandable by everyone? They ultimately can result in benefits for the most average of users. Like I've said numerous times, how many of these people who call in complaining are using the latest version of Mozilla or Phoenix? I'm willing to bet it's less than 5 ever, because most of the people using them would never call tech support for anything. The people who still think Mozilla is buggy obviously haven't used it in months or years if ever.

Last time I checked the free version of Opera had advertising; perhaps that has changed, but in any case, there's still a non-free version of Opera. You didn't need to tell me you've never heard of Phoenix, I could have easily guessed that. Mozilla is most definitely not Netscape plus anything; maybe two years ago that was true.

You obviously haven't done both proprietary IE web design and standard design. Until you do both, you are not allowed to say that one is easier than the other. (edit: perhaps that was a bit exaggerated, let me change that to "until you at least know the difference between [them].") [ 12-05-2002: Message edited by: adenine! ]
