The question of criminal insanity leading to role-playing games or role-playing games leading to criminal insanity cannot ever be answered because it has a moving target. The chicken came first? But dont they come from eggs? I guess the egg came first then. Then what laid it? I hate you die *pow* *pow* - another senseless victim of chicken eggs.
OMFGLOL!!! Okay that single line caused me to be deemed white jacket worthy...
The thing it most critiques is the idiot media, something I will also agree with.

Anyway, as a whole, the article is nothing new. True though.

In a society where criminals are never responsible for their actions, we are more than eager and impatient to crucify anything or anyone we suspect to be an 'enabler' - because in our New World Order, that is the only true criminal act.
That is probably one of the truest statements I have ever heard. This person is my new God.

EDIT: Wait...I mean point out the media is BS. People are being lead by a leash because Dan Skippy brought them the late breaking news that a Half-Elf and Drizzit just held a bus of nuns hostage. [ 10-10-2002: Message edited by: Ozimander ]
And back then the Church was really against it. Batezu were Demons or Devils..or something...it was changed by the time 2nd Ed. came out.

Back when there was the first surge of anti-D&D there were a few unusual events that allegedly occurred, and one that did. A kid committed suicide, and his mother blamed AD&D. She actually got other parents together and there was this parents against D&D group. They start going around telling everyone (mostly the media) about the horrors of D&D and how it promotes devil worship and incites kids to commit suicide and all this other stuff. Then they crossed the line, and said they had scientific proof.
This was the "put up or shut up" moment. They scrambled to get some test results together, and not only did the test results NOT support their claims, it proved almost the exact opposite. The findings of those tests were confirmed by an independent psychiatrist's study.
The truth is that yes, gamers tend to be a more cerebral group. They tend to form little cliques of other people. But that's not a bad thing. Teenage gamers tend to be the people who don't fit into the more traditional groups, and this gives them the same psychological social outlet that people involved in academic or sports extracurricular activities participate in, but with MUCH less stress to produce results involved.
Given the sheer volume of players out there, if it was driving people to suicide, we'd have an epidemic of suicides on our hands. There are, of course, a few people who get drunk and roleplay or do drugs and roleplay and end up doing something stupid, but there are fathers out there who'll beat other fathers to death of their kid's peewee hockey game; in other words, the freaky occurances are the exceptions that prove the rule. But on the whole, gaming is actually a vent to frustrations or worries. And that sort of thing can't contribute to suicide. It's very hard to prove that it keeps people FROM committing suicide, but what it does provide acts as a balancing agent.

Timpofee had this to say about Optimus Prime:
you know..
Tom Hanks was in a Movie that was anti D and D...
Tom was a kid who had to move from some other city because he was getting too caught up in this game called "Dragons and Dungons" or Castles and cobwebs" something like that..
Well they had decided as a group that they really would rather play live action so they went to these caves and stuff..
well.. basically at the end of the movie he went into a mental ward after trying to " storm the castle" which was the Empire state building
Funky movie.. i watched it at Bajahs house like a LONG time ago.. it was a B movie even thenUmmm... <--- evil for her Bah!
Yeah.. it was "Monsters and Mazes" if I remember correctly. Horrible li'l movie. They travelled through this mind shaft and schtuff, LARPing. And then Hanks, a cleric (or "holy man") starts getting way too into character. And then.. the cleric that is Hanks attempts to storm the castle with.. what was it? a utility knife? I found this movie funny enough to watch.
