Anyone watching CNN or Foxnews or wherever they're showing that video of the woman beating her kid in her child seat?

Not only does that turn my stomach, but one of my co-workers is singing "Maniac" with modifed lyrics... "She smacking the kid like she's never smacked before"... etc.

I was shocked. I said "This is not even remotely funny."

He said; "Yes it is. I get off on people smacking their kids around." He then keeps singing his song and laughing about this poor kid in a car seat getting beat by her mother.

I feel so angry and disgusted and sad right now.

imagine your co-worker strapped into a carseat completely defenseless and punching the shit out of him.

Well, CNN has a link to the video on their page, but I'm not signing up for it to watch some woman beat her kid.

I wouldn't subscribe to it even if I knew the person in the video. I would, however, leave work early and go hunting.

She's FROM Texas, eh? Fuck. That's twice in two days I've heard something bad about my state.

Time to take over.

As a father, I can say that her actions were reprehensible.

Madelyne Goman Toogood is wanted for a shoplifting charge in Texas. She is part of a traveling group of nomads that will make her hard to find.

Actions like that would make me crazy with the need to beat her to a pulp. Kids don't need to be hurt like that. Discipline is one thing. Beatings are NOT discipline, they're fear tactics. I want my kids to feel safe when they're near me, not fear me.

The actions of Mightion's coworker would probably have me up in his face shouting or going to the boss to lodge a complaint.

found no link to the video, but that's not needed.

This is absolutly sickaning. What did the child do to envoke such an act from her mother? Nothing should have.

The artical says she regrets it. But that regret won't save her from jail time and her child being taken away from her.

Oxygen-waster == the guy in dreadlocks laughing and singing about the kid getting beat up.

I don't know why he's still there. I monitored him once on a few calls and he did so bad my reviews would have gotten ME fired if I'd done that badly.

The sad fact is that this same kind of child abuse happens daily to a LOT of kids who don't get the "video camera in the parking lot" treatment.

One of the newsgroups I frequent is alt.support.childfree, and we have a frequent contributor there who is a Child Protective Services officer. She says that despite the publicity, this woman will probably walk with little more than a slap on her wrist (especially if the child doesn't have any visible signs of bruising). The sad thing to her is that, two weeks from now, we will have all forgotten this news story - but thousands of kids will still be suffering the same kind of abuse all across the country.

(alt.support.childfree is a newsgroup for people who have chosen to not have children, and who are having to deal with the criticism and nastiness of people who think that's not a valid life choice)

Bravo to the people on your newsgroup for having the guts to live their lives the way *they* want, rather than how society thinks they should.

I didn't want kids. My little boy is an accident. I'm not a maternal person. I love him, I will care for him, but I'm not the gushing mother type. So he lives with his dad 9 months of the year, and I get him in the summer. It works out, but people couldn't understand how I would agree to that sort of arrangement, and I got a lot of flack for it. So I know exactly how your newsgroup feels. But you have to do what's right for you.

Do you honestly think I'd ever tell him that? Not hardly.

I am a career-minded person. A family was never in my game plan. But accidents happen, and he came along. Now I've made provisions for him and I can still pursue my career, which is what I want.

I wouldn't make him happy if he were with me. His dad loves him to death. He's much better off with his dad most of the year, and then I can do special things with him in the summer. I'm not a kid person. I would go crazy if he were here all year.

I didn't say -anything- about you or your little boy, Lyinar.

Though, I am very happy to hear that he's cared for and loved by his father, anyway...

And I really do hope he never stumbles upon anything like this to read in his future.

I know exactly what I'll tell him if he ever asks. He was a surprise.

I was a surprise, too. My mom went in, thought she had a cold. Turns out she was pregnant.

It'll make him happy to be like Mommy.

Whats it matter if your parents werent married? You were still created out of an act of love by two people who loved eachother greatly and wanted to show that love in a physical and emotional way. What's the institution of marriage have to do with that?

Once again, what does it matter whether the child is an accident or not? Hell, I've known all along I was an accident, and like Lyinar, my mom made provisions for me that other people didn't understand (in my case, I was raised by my grandparents).

This is exactly the kind of BS that causes our support group to exist. There are people who just don't want kids - sometimes they wind up having them, and as long as they make the proper provisions, then what is the big deal? I haven't felt unloved, etc. On the contrary, my mother and I are quite close, although in a "sisterly" kind of way.

It's not anyone's place to judge the childfree, OR the people who have children who didn't necessarily want to. However, I think it IS ok to judge those who have children and then abuse them mercilessly - and then say "hey, it's my kid, I can do what I want".
