In other words, unless Sephiroth or Cloud starts spouting inane popsongs, I shall take it for what it is, a voice. Perhaps it is not the absolute best choice considering his reputation with the people who actually would buy this game, but I know I would give it a chance... If I had a PS2.

The changing of Cloud and Squall, and who only knows who else, also influnced me.
Just because someone's made a success out of using his voice talent isn't really grounds for assuming other voice talent work will suck.

Very much a matter of opinion.
Quite a few people enjoy their music - namely their harmony work. Its trendy to hate successful boybands =)
You could certainly argue that their lyrics are a bit shallow or that popcandy music isn't your thing, but its difficult to find grounds for saying they can't carry a tune.
i'm just saying lance bass doesn't seem to be the...wisest choice for voicing.
On another note, many humorous things come to mind when I think of Tim Curry voicing Sephiroth.

I haven't heard the voice overs, so I can't really comment. He is the bass part of N'sync (not just his last name =P) so its feasible that he could pull off a very dark brooding voice.
I'm just preaching a little open mindedness. I tend to think that a lot of the EC crowd would find a smidgen more happiness if they weren't so damn negative about things for the sake of being negative.
I hope it will be good, but I'm keeping an open mind about it.
Then again, I liked Saga Frontier too. (At least, Blue and Red stories.)

Without a doubt, however I don't think I fall into that category of girls, and I consider myself a fan. I also fancy myself to have a pretty broad horizon of musical tastes.
However, the vast majority of bands today survive off of a similar following. The teeny bopper crazed crowds feed the N'syncs of the world. The other genres of music are fed by their respective cliques.
If you found out the lead for Creed or even Nickleback was doing voice overs for Sephiroth, would you have the same problem?
I'm willing to bet all 3 have similar voices offstage. If you're such a fan of square's games, then give them the benefit of the doubt and a 5spot and try it out =) If it still sucks, at least you have a leg to stand on when complaining about it =P

i'm keeping an open mind, and i did not know that about n'sync (i don't really follow them, i guess ). from what i've heard of him, i'm not holding out much hope, but if what you say is true then it may be a little bit brighter.
i'm still slightly pessimistic. i'll decide when i hear a clip.

Heh, as an additional note, I'd like to point out that it'd cost me $205 plus tax to buy this game.
But honestly, I think that anyone who Square would find merely because of the person's popularity is a bad choice. They should hold auditions for it and not just call someone all the teeny boppers are after. It makes Square look bad. Really bad.
I dunno, I just expect a certain amount of seriousness from Squaresoft nowadays, with humor and minigames tossed in.
They brought the same seriousness it seems here... But I have trouble taking Goofy or Donald Duck seriously (Hell, his NAME is Goofy, how the heck do you take that seriously, ). And I dunno, Square has had silly/comic relief characters before, but this is... a whole new animal...
I'm gonna give it a chance, of course, but really, I play Squaresoft games for the story and character interest almost entirely, and from what I've seen, they both seem to be lacking here...
As a side note, I enjoyed SaGa Frontier, Delid. It was a very original concept, and executed rather well, not to mention, I found the stories pretty enjoyable, though I never did quite get to the very last, combo story... (I forgot which game I didn't finish, I think it was Lute's), my CD got ruined.
But I enjoyed Blue, and Asellus, and Emelia, etc.
It's just 'popular' to hate them without actually having a reason beyond "little girls like them!"

I personally wouldn't have chosen him first, but he *does* have a good, solid voice talent. I've heard his speaking voice in another movie, and he did pretty darn good there.
And Pips is right about harmony. Those boys have it. I like some of their songs, if only for the absolutely perfect way their voices all mix together. I like the Backstreet Boys on some songs for the same reason. I also consider myself a fan, simply because there are some songs by them I like just to like them.
Unfortunately, I cannot speak on Lance's capabilities, or Mandy Moore's (who has a very pretty feminine voice and I could really see doing well for Aeris), because my Blockbuster does not get Kingdom Hearts in till Friday
