I want a flat-screen, 17" monitor.

Deth's dad got him a Viewsonic when he got his new monitor. Is this a good brand? Where's the best place to purchase a new monitor? And what's a good, affordable deal?

If I get the position change at work that I want, I'm treating myself to a new monitor.

I'm not partial to any brand, but remember: in general, the higher the dot pitch, the cheaper it is and the crappier it looks.

What exactly is dot pitch?

I know nothing about monitors. I've had the same for 4 years now.

I've been very happy with my E70f from Viewsonic.

Clear as day, flatscreen, and little parakeets on the upper left...

Costs about 150 from newegg.

That's not bad. I was hoping to get a good quality one in that price range.

Do you want a CRT flatscreen or an LCD flatscreen? A 17" CRT flatscreen will be around $150 for a good one. A 17" LCD flatscreen will be between $400 and $550.

CRT, definitely

I've heard bad things about the flat-screen LCDs

I found out at work recently that it's common for customers with LCD-based TV's to get heavy pixelation and blurring during times of fast movement, and that they should never be given return authorization for thier recievers for said problems.

I've seen the same thing occur on CRT TVs with certain DVDs, but I guess that's the DVD encoding.

LCD also tends to have problems with color blend over time (least I heard the older models did for some reason), and don't last as long in general.

Depending on the Qulity Of the LCD Screen, you won't be able to play games on. High End one with activematrix and whole buch of other shet i am doo tired to rember can make the LCD'S preform the same as CRT's

The Dot Pitch i think is the actull pixel size on the monitor, i.e. the smallest unit that can be shown, the smaller the dot pitch the better.

My suggestion would be to spend the bucks and gett bigger than 17, more liek 19-21. the prices on them are not that high anynmore and the higher resoultions look spiffy on them.

I don't really want that big, though. The area for the monitor on my computer desk is already a bit cramped with a 15". So a 19" probably wouldn't fit.

If i remember correctly, flat screen = flat tube = flat crt.

Flat panel refers to LCD

Pike already explained Dot Pitch. For more detail, I found this.

Good brands:
:: My brother and I both use ViewSonic. They're a bit on the expensive side for the better models, but they last a while, and the picture quality is worth the cost.
:: NEC also makes good monitors.
:: Sony's monitors are decent, but you'll probably pay less for a comparable unit from NEC or ViewSonic. I've seen some expensive monitors from SONY. Their less expensive ones don't handle higher resolutions.

I am running two LCDs and a CRT. One LCD is a high end Apple display and the other is a an older low range NEC.
Both have great quality. however I do noptice some color problems from the NEC when playing movies. I haven't seen it when gaming however.
The apple display looks as good as my CRT. No problems in Movies, Games, or anything else.
Cheap LCDs are not that great. But the mid and high level ones are much better.
I use the NEC for everything except games and movies.

Back to the question. Lyinar you would be well served with a Viewsonic or pretty much any other mainstream brand. Just go to someplace like Bestbuy or Compusa where they have the moniters set up and tied to one computer. This gives you a good chance to compare them side by side.
Measure the space you have and take a tape with you to the store. You will find that most 19 inch are not that much larger than 17 inch anymore.

What are some reasons, besides desk space efficiency, to use flat panel displays over standard monitors?

A 17" flatscreen will have 17" viewable, whereas a 17" CRT will have less viewable space.

Apart from that you're spending exhorbitant amounts of money for desk space, and getting a monitor that is prone to blurring, sharpness, and color problems.

Here is my experience with LCDs and thier advantages over CRTs.

Lighter and smaller.
Low heat
Much crisper display
Easier on the eyes. (I can look at an LCD much longer than a CRT)

Downsides:
Much more expensive
lower end screens have below average color and are harder to view from an angle.

I'm posting from an LCD monitor as we speak, and if anything it's actually fuzzier than my flatscreen CRT at home. Although it doesn't seem to have any blurring probelms.

Even if an LCD were precisely the same as a CRT in every visual respect, the extra cash for just the lack of a picture tube wouldn't be worth it IMO.

I have a viewsonic A70F. Yes it's flat but the picture is slightly distorted and has been since I bought it. I am definitely not happy with it. I gave my wife my 17" Sony Trinitron Multiscan 200ES and I wish I had the damn thing back. The picture on this monitor is grainy compared to that one and this one supposedly has better stats. My next monitor will probably be a 19" or 21" Sony.

You get what you pay for in terms of monitors. this one cost me about 150$ at a retail store. You might be able to get better from newegg or someplace like that.

Monitors can be tricky.

I bought a brand new 19" samsung flatscreen a couple weeks ago. The picture is orgasmic, but the color needed a LOT of fine tuning to look right, and the image still quivers a bit at higher refresh rates, which drives me completely bonkers.

I am currently using a KDS Avitron AV7-TF the picture on it is crisp and clean no blurring anywhere. Its made by KDS but has a Sony Trinitron tube in it, they literally bought the monitors from sony slapped a different case on it and sell it for a lot less. I paid $135 for my monitor and it delivers the same picture as my friends monitors and some of them spent $300 - $400 on thiers.

Buy a KDS or a Viewsonic they are both pretty high quality and are relatively cheap. Ive worked retail in the computer industry for 3 years I deal with this every day.
