I bought Warcraft3 the day it was released (waited until midnight for the special store opening and all.. got NWN & War3 at same time)..
BUT...
Every time I try to install it, I get 50-75% of the way through the install, catch a Blue Screen of Death (damn Win98), and when I reboot my puter, I have either:
1) Missing Operating System (full reformat and reinstall of EVERYTHING... wheeee )
or
2) Some kind of screwy error where if I use the mouse to click any icon on theDesktop, I instantly get a BSD and have to reboot... only to re-encounter said screwy error leading to BSD and have to reboot... which leads to same screwy error and.......... ARGH!!
Does anyone know wtf? is happening? I've done virus scans (using Mcafee latest versions) on the whole system, 3 reformats, and even tried a virus scan of the War3 CD wondering if somehow a virus "went gold" too, but so far... nada.
HAELP!!!!!

Perhaps...
But then again compared to some of the horror stories I've heard about Win2k, ME, XP, etc, I tend to wonder if maybe Win98 for all it's faults isnt actually the most stable platform of them all....
besides which, the game is supposed to be Win98 compatible (at least it says so on my copy)...
any other ideas plz?

I have no problems with Win98 whatsoever. I could count the number of explorer crashes, BSODs, or other problems related to the OS I've had in the past several years of using it on one hand. I guess I'm abnormal though.

Linux isnt Mainstream, and Ive never used a mac (and wont anytime soon. I like my games)
Tell me. What OS is more stable than XP AND is a viable choice for a gamer?
It's worth a shot

Aside from older DOS games, Win2k.

Ditto. And I've never had XP problems either.

Win2k.
Need I point out the issues that lots of people are having with GF3 cards, VIA chipsets and XP? Or the issues with XP and Audigy cards that pissed people off? Maybe with XP and "older" games (not recognizing OS, not being playable at all, etc)?
The only games I've had issues with under 2k are games that are either DOS based (and I have a copy of VMWare so I don't care) or don't run under Windows NT (some older games)
But if that doesn't work, hell, I don't know what will except for spending more money.

I've never heard of that. And I don't use a GF3, so I haven't experienced this first hand. Im guessing these problems are ONLY present in Windows XP? And of course, whats to say that the problem isn't with VIA or Nvidia for not having quality WinXP drivers out? They ARENT the only Video card and motherboard chipset makers out there yanno
quote:
Or the issues with XP and Audigy cards that pissed people off?
Mostly Driver issues. I had alot of problems before with my Audigy, but found that my RAID controller drivers weren't updated. Updated them, and boom. Problems solved. Also, Ive heard of Audigy problems with 2k, so...

Name some of em? Ive been able to run any game I've tossed at XP
The same driver issues that existed under XP also existed under 2k, but under 2k there were FAR fewer reports of crashing in games, and fewer reports of fucked up sound in the OS itself.
SonicCD is the only game that springs to mind right now, but that's because it's the only "classic" game I've tried to load in the past 6 months. All my other games are either DOS based and unplayable, or I just don't feel like playing them. There are more games out there though, it was one of the things I was "warned about" when installing 2k...

I know it effects GF3 cards on VIA chipsets because a co-worker has one of thoes setups. Probally does the same thing with GF4 cards. It's been traced to an "oddity" in WinXP that allows the GF3 card and the VIA chipset to share resources. Normally this isn't too bad, but XP doesn't block one from accessing the space when the other is already accessing it which leads to BSOD. 2k does not suffer with this and the only "solution" is to use ancient GF3 drivers and old VIA drivers. The same driver issues that existed under XP also existed under 2k, but under 2k there were FAR fewer reports of crashing in games, and fewer reports of fucked up sound in the OS itself.

No problems with the most unholy of PC setups, an AMD/GF4/Via Chipset/SB Audigy. No blue screens. nothing.

Actually, I'd probably attribute my lack of problems to the fact that my hardware configuration in this computer hasn't changed at all in the past 4 years except for an added HD and new network card. Not fucking with it has made it stable as a rock. Too bad I'm gonna have to finally hang up the old girl soon and buy a new computer.
