If it wasn't for the fact that on monday (mabey) the computer might work again for the first time in almost two months and the fact that, unlike other computer manufactorers i have dealt with, your customer service and tech support has always been polite and helpful despite many hidrances, i would have thrown my hands into the air and given up a long time ago.

this actually relived a lot of stress for me. and if it doesn't work after i connect the new power spliter, i'm going to raise hell and high-water.

Hey both companies have done it for me. 24 - 48 hour turn around on parts. Replacement systems within about 4-5 business days. I don't remember the exact time on the complete system replacements though. so it may have been a bit over 5. It wasn't anything like weeks though.

When I'm not alone, too.
Kinda freaks out people when they hear sudden randomly vocalized things.
Oh, and if shit dosen't go your way, just stick fireworks in it and let the thing go out with a bang.

A company that gets it right, every single time it does something, is an impossibility due to that wonderful thing we call human error.
so please, when saying, "OMG 1 t0ld u 2 bu1ld y4s3lf!@@OI!$&!(&@!!!~!!!!!!~~!!~!~~~~!" realize that i don't give a fuck.

you see, the big problem comes with the second part about fixing them.
That's usually just RMAing the fucked up hardware back to the manufacturer.
a) Gateway and Dell RMA through the mail just like every other vendor (except the part you get back will likely be a part that someone else RMA'd and they refurbished, but since they're likely selling you refurbished parts at higher-than-new prices to begin with I guess that's a moot point)
b) Independent vendors have RMA departments that are just as good if not better.
c) Gateway/Dell RMA's will, on occasion, also take forever. I know this from personal experience.

Y'know... if you got the parts just bring it over to my place and me and dad'll have it up and running like a dream in no time flat (well, ok, maybe a day or two... but still...).
We won't even charge you.
Edit: You could probably even get your cousin to do it... assuming he remembers anything he learned in that hellish class. [ 07-21-2002: Message edited by: ArchAngel ]

Actually, when you buy a Dell you can choose to pay a little more and get the higher service plan that includes having them send a person to your home or office sometimes even on the same day, but usually within 24 hours. They diagnose and repair on the spot usually. I've known people that have used this and it is nice if you don't know crap about the insides, or don't trust yourself messing with them.
Dell actually makes a good product if you don't by the cheapest lowend home crap. Most companies I have worked for or been to use Dells almost exclusively. Two of the 3 machines I have are Dells (the 3rd is a box Intel gave me with a prerelease northwood so I could test our code on it).
Of course, at home all of my machines are built by me using parts I got from local stores or online. I dunno why, but I am up to 10 machines now, heh... I just keep going and buying new parts to get the latest stuff...

Now we know where our 12 buck a month goes
They pay you to much my friend
Gamers and geeks tend to build their own computers, while others go for prebuilt since they're better known.
My current comp is in-between, tailored to my choices, but I'm regretting I didn't look at all the damn hardware conflicts that could've occured. Next comp I'm building'll probably cost like $4000 worth of pieces, and you can bet I'll spend a week just making sure none of the hardware conflicts!

Nah, I'm just single with little debt. Makes it easy to spend money on computers. I have extra, also, because I don't smoke or drink (like a lot of freaks wasting their money).
That $12.95 a month goes toward a great many things... ISP, maintenance, CS, etc. We don't net that much...

Ah, but of the $4,800,000 in monthy fees, how much goes toward re-designing the necro epic?
Also, how in the world would Dell be able to get a guy and a replacement part out to your house faster than you could get the replacement part?
Online vendors I can understand, but I live about two miles from a reliable hardware vendor
I still say they're overpriced crap. But that's me. [ 07-22-2002: Message edited by: Maradön² ]

Not faster, but at the same speed. They overnight the part to the service center and they call you before noon to set up a time to work on it. Best time I have ever had was from dell. I called in the late afternoon one day about a problem. Ended up being a bad Motherboard in my laptop. This is NOT something I was going to mess with myself. A desktop sure. Laptop, no way in hell.
So the next day about 9AM I get a call from thier service people in the area. (I think it is Bantec) and the guy is at my house by 11:30 or so. We swap some stupid customer stories while he works and he is done within about half an hour.
If you have a reliable parts vendor near you that is great. I don't. The closest I have is Best buy. And frankly I don't like thier parts selection. So lacking a good place locally I go with the next best thing. A company that will have the problem fixed in about the time it would take me to do it myself.
