Puh-leaz.

The guy shows a little concern about his children, and suddenly he's a badguy. And I'm inclined to agree with him about America's educational system. Just a little.

I don't think it makes him a bad American, but I do think he's being a little paranoid. And a bit lazy. If he wants his kids to grow up with good values, then he should instill those values as they grow. If he doesn't want them to believe the same as people around them, then he should teach them why they shouldn't think like that. Teach, not lecture or dictate. Meaning providing whys and why nots.

It also looks like he's worried about safety. Which I can see. I have a 3 year old. I'm worried about him. But he could just as easily get hurt in something mundane as some terrorist attack or as the victim of a crime. Life contains risks. Just something people have to live with.

I figure he has the right to raise his kids wherever he damn well pleases. It's not our place to step in and say what's right or wrong; as long as he's not relocating them to some horrible location, I see nothing wrong with him taking them to Austrailia or whatever. Their HIS kids, he's THEIR parent, it's HIS choice, and it's not our place to criticize.

Yes, he does. Nobody's disputing that. But in my opinion, it's a little stupid and irresponsible to blame the country for your kids not growing up right. If he raises them right, they'll grow up right wherever it is he raises them. And there's no guarantee where he takes them is going to be better than where they were before.

Since he's a celebrity, a statement like this sounds to me a bit like a publicity stunt. But maybe I'm just cynical.

True, but from what I can see, they're NOT messed up... he's just taking them somewhere where he figures the likelihood of being messed up is less. Okay. Not my problem. I can agree or disagree all I want, he's not flinging blame around yet, he just figures one place is better than another.

I know. It's just like I said. I think it's a bit irresponsible. They'll grow up how he teaches them, plain and simple. There are influences around them, yes, but they don't have to follow those influences. If he doesn't want them to, he should teach them not to. If he doesn't, he has no one to blame but himself.

Actually, generally speaking, it's not even about the teaching them morals, Lyinar, Society has a great effect on your children, regardless of your parenting (Unless you like, lock them in the basement).

I would, on safety principle, as well say that with Australia's crime and disaster rate compared to America's, probably like to put my children Australia as well... Not to sure of the Education numbers, but that's probably a point in Australia's favor as well... (Not like Cruise's kids probably go to public schools anyway though, :P)

I find it impossible to believe that you can seriously say that a person's environment and society has no effect on them.

I know I do, that's why I'd want my kids to stay in America.

The article was rather ambiguous about Tom's reasoning for sending his kids out of the country, but I think it's probably a safe bet to assume it's because he's got his head firmly planted in his ass and is only choosing to see the worst in people.

The article had some vague references, but you don't send your kids to austrailia because you're worried about crime. Good luck finding a crime-free-terrorism-free country.
