Human Cleric with Tomi the Halfling Rogue for lockpicking and trap disarming. Also either summon a Dire Spider or a Skeletal Warrior.
That is really where I lack. I have to save before I open every trapped chest in case it kills me. Lockpicking I am just SOL.
However in combat we are unstopable.

I do the healing, the rogue does the bow/range attack, and the summoned beastie does the melee. We're unstoppable in combat AND I cover all bases except magic direct damage
Who needs to PICK locks on chests? BEAT EM UP! (hint: Get a weapon with elemental damage ofr that -- would seem chests dont absorb elemental damage...)
And traps? blah! I ghetto disarm em: I run over em and hope to make the save, and hope its a reflex safe. hehe

Sharwyn, Human Bard.
Sharpfang, Dire Wolf.
It's a nice combo. Sharwyn unlocks locks, gives me spell backup, and uses her bow while I tear into them with twin swords. If I ever need a little muscle, or Sharwyn eats dust, Sharpfang gives me a good backup.

Why does this remind me of the last part of the first episode of the Clerks cartoon?
I positively loathe games that involve "party members", usually because the AI is frustratingly not what I'd like them to do.

It is probably one of the best I have seen. Spell choice is great and they heal you when they should for the most part. Enemies and party memebers will actually get into the position that best fits their class and current syle.
MY biggest complaint is that it is just you and a partner. No real grouping. That takes away from the overall ADnD feel in my opinion.
AI, pretty good.
Pathing, really really really bad.
Tomi sees me try to get into a locked box, but there is a pillar between myself and him. So he just stands there trying to figure out a path and I have to somehow get him to the other side of the pillar before he finds one. =/
Tomi spots a trap through a wall and a locked door, he IS a halfling what did you expect. He tries to path through the locked door and over another trap in the way, ignoring everything else and sticking to the locked door until I tell him to move. If I'm feeling mean I can always just open the door for him and watch him suicide over the second trap while pathing to the first one.
Tomi spots a trapped box, but there is a script that prevents the trap from being removed. Tomi freaks out and starts repeating, "Aye hold up there" over and over and over again. I eventually have to teleport home, ditch him, teleport back, move to a different part of the dungeon, teleport home again, pick up Tomi, then teleport back.
I'm sorry did I call the AI good, I must have been mistaken.
The good news is that it isn't really the AI that's bad, it is just that some of the event scripts in the game break the AI. If you look at some of the event scripts you can see the mistakes and even fix them if you are up to a little work.

Jeez, you even have to cheat in NWN so you can play as Daelan. You really are pretty lame Faz [ 06-28-2002: Message edited by: Skaw ]
I have Sharwyn as my NPC, on because she is nicer too look at then that half-orc barbarian. I pretty much cover all the bases without a henchman.
And then I have the dire bear, of course.
Until I got to the Bloated Dire Spider in The Beggar's Nest, I didn't even use a henchman.
That thing kicked my ass SO many times. [ 06-28-2002: Message edited by: Densetsu ]
"Here comes halfling death!"
I need a better summon spell than that damn badger, though...
things die.. horribly.

I took Grimgnaw as a partner for a bit.
My god. That little sick bastard kicks alot of ass.
2 monks...we were both racking up insane amounts of hits...spellcasters had no hope against getting a spell off...and it was nasty when somethin got knocked down...
My second time through as a Fighter/Ranger I took Linu because I figured I'd take a useful henchman this time.
The spellcasting AI can be frustrating. When I had Sharwyn, she'd often run into melee and cast while in the melee range of 4-5 things. I didn't need Bull's Strength THAT BAD She'd also cast Shout A LOT. While that may be a good spell, it was always resisted AND a support type spell would be a better use of that slot. Or she'd cast mind affecting spells on undead. You know, just useless stuff. Linu at least casts useful spells (Flame Strike, Hold Person, Searing Light, ect.), but Sharwyn seemed to had taken all of the crappy bard spells. The only thing she cast that was incredibly useful was Improved Invisibility and Haste. [ 06-28-2002: Message edited by: Lalian Viajante ]
I have Faelynn Sorceress/Ranger she uses her summoned Panther as a partner. No henchmen unless ABSOLUTELY nessesary.
How the hell are you supposed to open chests/locked doors without him?
His sneak attacks are brutal, and when I kill a mob and then get 2-3 Cleave hits automatically, things die very fast.
Tomi tends to get wasted early on in boss fights, though... though he can handle himself when four regular mobs jump him...
On my Ranger, my Dire Wolf Pet and the Bard Lady where my group.
On my Sorcy I used my Familiar Rogue and that Half-Orc Dude.
I use Grimgnaw.

Afterwards the Cleric will bash it open with her mace, or the Wizard will cast a few magic missiles/fireballs on the chest to open it. :>
Nothing else is needed, we're wasting everything.
