Well, Ryuujin, just realize that that was (almost certainly) said in a fit of anger. When she calms down, try to sit down for good talk, few things can help more if both parties are willing to work out whatever it is that's causing the problem.

The only thing is, there's some sort of morbid curiosty inside me that can't help but wonder WHY said parent did such a thing.

Not that anything could excuse it. It's like a person watching a car accident. Can't help but look/wonder.
