I got a strange email in my personal box today. Which is strange in and of itself, since I havent given out the addy to just anyone.

Anyway, it was all caps, horrible english, and was obviously a scam (Oh, I have xx money to invest in ur country!) etc.

Quickly deleted it, then ran that wonderful online virus checker.

It found said file in title, and deleted it..

Am I safe?

Since it seems like that was the only infected file and it's gone now, yeah, completely safe.

I think it's just a spyware file anyway.

Right then and there, I would have deleted it.

If I get an e-mail from someone I don't know, it dies right away. I don't bother to open them and see what it was, I just trash it.

I find that's the best way to do things.

I did delete it, but unfortunatly, I forgot that rightclicking any file in Outlook (Unless specifically disabled) autopreviews it.

Time to go into options and disable it! Rar.

"computer virus" is a fairly loose term these days.

Literally, it just means a program that replicates itself, I think. It doesn't even have to do harm to your computer.

Even better
Go into Security, set the "Restricted sites zone" option

Voila,
no more javascript
no more executables
no more downloads
no more klez
no more pop-ups
no more virii clones

That's a worm

Dictionary.com:
Virus: A program that searches out other programs and "infects" them by embedding a copy of itself in them, so that they become Trojan horses

Last I checked, pop-ups don't infect your files.

QED

Since you deleted the file and such, you should be fine. If anything funny occurs, make sure to do another virus check. If not, just do one tomorrow or something, just to be sure your computer's running spiffy and all.

Fear me.

Yes
Worms are a subset of virii. But they usually replicate themselves, or use other applications and leaks in them (e.g Nimda and IIS), but don't modify the application itself to replicate.

Neither of which a pop-up does

However there are HTML code holes (as well as Java holes, ActiveX holes, Flash holes, etc) that can force your system to run malicious code.

Yes it is possible to get infected from a pop-up. It's possible to get infected by looking at a web page. And it all sucks ass.

Er, I like my auto-magic flash stuff popping up. I dont "surf", I just camp my favourite bookmarks, and they're all pretty safe (Save for this place sometimes. *Points to the afformentioned Post that Mr. Duck refrenced*)

Kinda nice to have an online virus scanner, though.
