Anyone have any idea when the new thoroughbred cores will be commercially released?

ps. I'm really, really not in the mood for another Intel/AMD war thread, I just want to know when I'll be able to get one

Last I had read, the Duron was being phased out by the end of the year. The Athlon chips would become the "Value" line of chips and the new chipset (codenamed Hammer I think) will be available by the end of the year. Duron production ends soon.

I have my "list", which is a £5000 full custom PC upgrade. I update it every so often, so when I have the cash I can splash out on a custom mega-PC... possibly two. Given my current wage, and the fact I have zero outgoing payments, that'll take me around three months to save for.

Yes, I'd rather have a mega-PC than a car.

Good choice. In a car, you have to actually like, drive everywhere you go, requiring a lot more skill then it takes to type www.evercrest.com in a browser and go halfway across the world.

IIRC, Duron's are being phased out because there really isn't a need for them. It's like 20 dollars more to just get a low end Athlon, so there's not really a point for AMD to continue making a "budget" processor, because they already compete, price wise, with Celerons.

Instead of having a budget chip, AMD is going to replace the Athlon MPs with Opteron (Hammer) chips. The ClawHammer is the 32-bit workstation version, the SledgeHammer is the 64-bit server version.

Yea...and stuff.

The Thoroughbred core was touched on a bit, but not really much even though people are saying the launch is just around the corner. "Smaller, Cooler, Faster" was the message being broadcasted. It was discussed that the Barton (SOI core technology) would have 384K on-die L2 cache as well.

Thoroughbred CPUs will initially stretch deep into Palomino MHz territory. Here is not only a list, but also required voltages for the TBred CPUs.

1.5V - 1700+, 1800+, 1900+
1.6V - 2000+, 2100+
1.65V - 2200+

Also PSU power was heavily touched on for the system builder present. It was stressed that over wattage rating for PSUs was not important, but rather the 5V rail is what to pay attention to. A minimum of 45AMPs will be required on the 5V rail due to TBred power consumption. The rail amperage rating should be printed on pretty much any PSU you find.

So in your quote, we're looking at 250 watts... where's the other 350 spent?

Where'd you get those numbers anyhow? Everything I've read points to how the Thoroughbred core offers a 20% or more reduction in power consumption.

And do you honestly think AMD runs around giving them info like that?

They've released info on the OPTERON, with the Hammer core. The server/workstation chip. Gee, that wouldn't have higher power reqs!

But I see no real signs of hard info on the Desktop CPU yet. Point us to it, and we might take you seriously.

He's probably using numbers from an overclocked Duron or something
