LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Angry parents demanded the resignation of a California high school vice principal Tuesday because she lifted the skirts of teenage girls at a dance in front of men and male classmates to make sure they were wearing "appropriate" underwear.Parents at Rancho Bernardo High School in suburban San Diego say the vice principal, Rita Wilson, made the girls prove that they were not wearing thong underwear before they were allowed into the dance on Friday.
In some cases, said Rancho Bernardo parent Kim Teal, girls also were made to partially undress if Wilson or another teacher suspected that they weren't wearing bras.
"These girls feel violated," said Teal, whose daughter Rebecca, a sophomore, was asked about her underwear but escaped a search after telling Wilson that she was not wearing a thong. "One girl just cried after having to tell her father this story, she was hiding her head in a sweatshirt," Teal said. "After a while the girls finally got the idea that they shouldn't say 'thong' when they were asked.
Wilson and Paul Gentle, Rancho Bernardo's principal, were unavailable for comment on the skirt-lifting. But earlier Gentle told local KGTV that he was looking into the situation and planned a meeting with the offended parents.
Don Phillips, superintendent of the Poway Unified School District, said students, staff and others were being interviewed to determine what happened at the dance, which he said was attended by about 725 pupils.
"The principal is talking with the parents involved," he said. "We are taking this seriously and want to ensure that any actions to be taken are based on the facts of the situation."
Teal, a 43-year-old attorney, said she was told about the skirt-lifting after the dance by her daughter, whose friends were forced to lift their skirts in front of boys, teachers and police officers standing at the door.
She said hundreds of girls attended the dance, which had a "blast from the past" theme and that most of those wearing skirts or dresses reported being grilled about their underwear or forced to show them to Wilson or another teacher.
Teachers also checked several boys who were wearing toga-style costumes, Teal said, and girls were often asked about their bras. "I just got a call from one mom who said her daughter was wearing a poodle skirt and an off-the-shoulder top and a teacher reached right out and grabbed the front of it and pulled it down to check," Teal said.
Teal said she and other parents would meet with Gentle to demand the resignation of Wilson and any other teachers willingly involved. If Wilson does not resign, she said, the parents were prepared to file a lawsuit against the school district for violating the civil rights of their daughters.
I see no wrong here.

The Constitution already doesn't apply to students in school in regards to locker searches - don't be surprised if this situation is found to be parallel in the eyes of the law.
This was just plain wrong.

The privacy laws dont apply to lockers cause technically, the lockers dont belong to the students, they're only on loan.
BUT, not only can this probably be used for personal privacy invasion, but also borders on pedophilia or something like that. I aint a lawyer though, so I dont really know..
I DO know that if this happened at my school, I dont care how it would affect my grade and whatever. I would flat out refuse to go. Truency officers knocking at my door? I'd tell em straight up to go screw themselves. That kind of thing just aint right.

Kids have been exempt from constitutional rights for a looong time, sure. Most kids don't know thier legal rights anyway.
I almost agree with this. Having sleeveless shirts banned in your high school (like they were in mine) is a great way to teach kids, by contrast, the value of personal freedom.
This issue, however, has the added appeal of being forced public humiliation as well as sexual harassment. In addition, it was completely unnesscessary. Even the tried-and-true excuses high school administrators just love to use - "it's distracting to students" or "it interrupts the educational process" - can't apply here. It's an UNDERGARMENT.
Just more of the same idiocy that puts America's public education system among the worst in the world, imo. [ 04-30-2002: Message edited by: Maradön? ]
I'm quite surprised there weren't any violent outbursts/injuries. [ 04-30-2002: Message edited by: Waisztarroz ]
I guess potential peeks at boobies are less disruptive than armpit hair.

In my school, it was the exact opposite.

If its high school, id be willing to bet 80% or more of the males have seen "boobies" before anyway...

That way, it almost makes a modicum of sense, though.

Yeah, the only beef that I have with the rule is it's blatant unconstitutionality.
The girls actually organized a "Right to bare arms" day. It went over pretty well.
That being said... Why doesn't this sort of thing happen at MY school?
...Just kidding.

Ugh. I just had a flashback to US History...EVERYONE made that same fucking joke when we were doing the Constitution.

In other news, the girls in Mustang, Oklahoma, wear clothes so tight that you can tell whether or not they're wearing a thong/g-string/whatever. Sometimes you can even tell what color it is.
Or they're wearing low-rider capris and they like to bend over - alot. Right in front of you. And they're wearing a hot pink thong.
>_<;
Guess what. FUCK YOU Mr. Principal bish.
But a friend of mine did some green in his har once. Every now and then, he'd do a little more in it. I was absent one day, but he told me had had done his whole head green. And they made him go home, and pretty much told him not to come back if he didn't change his hair color.
Mind you, he'd been adding more and more green, off and on, for about a month or two now. So nobody was really very happy with this decision.
But it's okay because Mrs. Blevins has no sense of matching when it comes to clothing, and it's a Technicolor Dream World every single day we see her.
I was a good boy in School though.
