Different eras, Mog. Frank Miller revolutionized things with Watchmen and Dark Knight returns. Gave things a frightening realistic edge.

Alex Ross and Mark Waid (I think it was)carried on the tradition beautifully. Took existing trends in comics and turned them into a brilliant bit of storytelling.

I'd have to rate them both 10's for what they did.

On another note: Is it just me or were the following Marvel series the most kickass comics EVER- 1st Secret wars and Age of Apocolypse
