Do the words "I love you" mean anything any more? I hear it about ten times a day, 0 from my family, and I could care less. I believe I have said it about 10-12 times and never really meant it in a really serious way. Intodays society it has close to no emotional value: You help a girl out with some work she tells you she loves you, does not mean it though; you start joking around with a guy, or get him drunk(same effect), and you have a chance of him saying it.

Has the term that was once so "emotion" heavey become now nothing more than a phrase of appreciation or humor?

It means alot to me. I do not hear it all that often. And, if someone is joking around then I know that they are joking (or trying to cover up their feelings for me ) but I do not hear it much. My father says it everytime that we end a telephone conversation, or after my visits are over, but I don't get it from much of anyone else, not even my mother.

If someone did say it I would probably say "really"?

It depends on how it's used..

For instance, I tell a lot of my friends that I love them, because I do, in a sisterly way, and because sometimes they need reassurance that someone's actually there for them. There ARE other types of love then that between, say, a girlfriend and boyfriend.

When I tell someone I love them, like I tell my friends I love them, I mean it sincerely. I rarely joke around about it.

And it does help some of them, I like to think. I have this need to help people feel better about themselves.

I never joke around with that phrase. I say it to my VERY close friends and family, and even rarely then. I just dont use that word much, and eventually, it feels like its expected.

The one person I say that phrase to multiple times daily, means so much to me I cant describe it. Its a thrill every time I say it, and every time he says it back to me, my heart flutters.

Yes, the words "I love you" can become an everyday, even boring thing. It just depends on who you say it to, how, and why.

I will tend to use the word "I love you" in humor from time to time. But you can definately tell if from my tone. I'm naturally a lighthearted person and alot of the things that I say are in jest.

But, I do say it to a few people in my life with complete meaning behind it. And when I say it to one person in particular, I know a smile beams from my face, and sometimes I feel like just letting out a nice sigh, you know.. the kind you do when everything is just going your way.

The words "I Love You" mean nothing unless backed up by something more significant. Just saying "I Love You" is not sufficient way of conveying a feeling. You can hear "I Love You" every day of your life, but unless they SHOW you that they love you in other ways, it is meaningless. Monica tells me she loves me on occasion, but it's just a worthless phrase. In some ways that can be hurtfull, because nothing hurts more than an empty love.

I however am fairly open with the phrase. I say it a lot, and I say it often. One difference, if I say it. You know I mean it, because I show it. It doesn't matter what the relavence of the love is, friedship, lover, or otherwise. But if you can't show you love someone, telling them you love them is meaningless.

I have a deep love and respect for Synny and KaL for instance, and they know this, because I don't just say it. In fact I rarely if ever actually SAY "I Love You" unless it's joking around and its like "I lub you Synnah!" or something, but they know it's there. Same goes for those I concider pseudo family members like Pesco and Az, or Kloie and Lash. Even in an intense friendship it has meaning, as long as you show them what they mean to you. Otherwise you could bark like a dog, and it wouldn't mean any more that way.

Of course hanging around for the same in return, can be selfish and make them feel like it's required. Which in that case defeats the purpose of saying you love someone, for whatever reason. Id rather know my friends care, then hear them tell me they love me, that means worlds more. Saying "I Love You" at random seems to degrade the feeling if there is no backing.

So yes, in part, I agree. The phrase has lost some of it's impact, and meaning in recent history.

The words "I love you" mean absolutely nothing until they show it. Even if it's just a simple smile.

"I love you" these days without physical attention is just to they can make you feel loved and not hated but they really have no love for you both ways. (If you don't know what I'm talking about: sister-brother / romance)

Don't flame at me because it's been happening to me a lot lately so I really do know.

"I love you." ... Well, I've only said those words on one person, romantically. And I have only loved one person, romantically.

... And I'm very happy they are the same person. Whenever He says the words... it makes me feel like my life is ok.. Everything is alright. It makes my heart skip a beat, and I smile so much.... And When I say it.. I mean it. For me, it's not something given lightly.

As far as frendship goes... I have told very few friends this.. there's a few it applies to, though I'm not sure if I've saidit to them, mainly my RL friend, Carissa, Aza, Baj, and Suchii. I would give anything to make these people happy. ... That's what constitutes love for me.

I also say it to my parents, and to my sister. Now, I may not LIKE my sister, but I still love her.

When I say to epople 'I lub j00!" ... well, it basically means I thik you are a good friend of mine. In some cases, -very- good. Well.. that's it, pretty much.

Those words are like a key. Sometimes, that key is used for bad things, like to get to someones pants instead of heart. Then, the key is used incorrectly. This has happened alot so it is now needed to do more then just use the key for it to work. You've go to sorta lean on it when you try and use it. Add a little 'oomf' to it.

Does anyone understand that?

So when I say it, it's because I mean it.

Say the Words (Now)

by DC Talk

Solomon once wrote
Better is open rebuke
than hidden love
So say the words
Silence is golden
but these are the words that the world needs to hear
Terms of compassion will cause a reaction
As love draws them near
But still we choose to hide
Behind the face of pride
Pretending we are blind to the calling
This is my point and case
If hate can be erased
With such a simple phrase
Why are we stalling

CHORUS:
Say the words, say the words, say I love you
Say the words I long to hear
Say the words, say the words, say I love you
Say the words I long to hear

Some just assume we already know
of the love that they feel
Some have a heart-felt emotion
But never the words to reveal
I think we all relate so why are we afraid
to let our hearts convey what we're feeling
There is a world in need
With hungry souls to feed
And love can intercede
If we're willing

CHORUS
Say the words, say the words, say I love you
Say the words I long to hear
Say the words, say the words, say I love you
Say the words I long to hear

BRIDGE: (rap)
The word love
Well it was once over-used
Back in the '70's the word was abused
But I refuse to let love be diluted
We can't allow physical lust to intrude it
Or pollute it 'cause there ain't no excuse
For the greatest gift of all to be abused
So choose to lose the pride that may tug at you
Don't be afraid of the words "I love you"

CHORUS (to Fade)
Say the words, say the words, say I love you
Say the words I long to hear
Say the words, say the words, say I love you
Say the words I long to hear
