Anyone know where I can find something of that nature? Or at least a keyboard map of the dvorak layout? heh.
Step 2. Bash head against wall.
Step 3. Repeat.
Ever think theres maybe a REASON Dvorak keyboards havent caught on yet?

The standard QWERTY keyboard lay out is a left-over from mechanical typewriters.
It's actually deliberatly set up to slow typists down, so they don't jam up the pins that hammer down the letters.
Dvorak is designed for electronic mediums. It's configured with the most used keys on the home row, and it's set up to speed typing rather than hinder it.

Same reason we're not using the metric system?
I think the latest Mavis Beacon teaches Dvorak layout. I learned on my Amiga, way back when.
You don't need a special keyboard, either: just change the keyboard language in Windows. That has the added benefit of keeping others off your machine, as the letters painted on the keyboard no longer correspond to the letters being typed.
You can check the box of Mavis Beacon, and it'll tell you whether it supports Dvorak.

Of course, I'm just now getting to the point that I can actually type shit mostly correct without looking at the kybd. Never been one for touch type....
It's still death for me to glance at my keyboard while typing.

WPM isn't an objective scale, but switching from QWERTY was an instant 20wpm increase for me. I understand that's about average, unless you're seriously god-like with QWERTY.
I touch-type QWERTY, too, and it's not that hard to switch, though it takes a day or so to get back full speed.

Dvorak is downright awesome if you have to type for any great length of time. It's tricky to learn if you've been using the qwerty model for a while. We have a couple people in the office who use it, and they flat out fly when it comes to typing.
But once you've made the switch, you'll never go back

I dunno if I could use the DAOWOASDAMDAOBVA board. I don't use the standard way of typing on the qwerty boards, like home keys and all that junk, yet I can type very fast.
I have no idea what kind of board you mean.
I use a standard (MS Natural) keyboard, and map Dvorak via the OS.
Once you learn to touch-type correctly, regardless of the system you choose, your speed will increase.

The US Navy did a study many years ago and the average increase in typing speed was 50%.
This change also reduces the risk of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, since your fingers are not moving as much to the distant keys but remaining on the "home" row more often. [ 01-24-2002: Message edited by: Kanid ]

I had the worst time in my typing classes in HS simply because my fingers don't actually rest comfortably on 'home' row. Either my index finger or my pinky finger is always a row off, and i have to twist my wrists out to the side to even line up that much... makes the 'standard' touch typing very hard.
I type by touch, but my hands are all over the keyboard. Other people are weirded out by the way I type... but it works for me. I type at about 60-65 wpm. And since my job generally end up with me using other people's keyboards, I'd probably go insane trying to switch.
Anyone who uses DVORAK have any comments on switching back and forth after learning? I heard that it's death, but that was from someone... rather inflexible...

Switching back and forth isn't that hard. Takes a bit to get back into it, but my technique is that, when I'm typing Dvorak, I don't look at the keyboard, but when I'm typing QWERTY, I glance at the keyboard every few seconds (not to cheat, but as a mental cue what layout I'm typing).
On the home row, you should try an ergonomic keyboard. I prefer the MS Natural, but others like a flatter layout. It really helps.

Any idea how to do this in WinXP?
Go to Keyboard, Languages, and the Properties. Under "keyboard layout," Dvorak should be right there.
I figured it out though.
It'll even let me switch from qwerty to dvorak and back by pressing a hotkey combination! yay!

In control panel:
Regional and Language options => Languages tab => Details => Add => Check the "Keyboard Layout/IME" checbox and select "English Dvorak" from the dropdown box.
To set the hotkey, click "Key Settings" in that same window.

For PC, Mavis Beacon is the only one I've tried. The version I got also supported Dvorak.
It was pretty good, though I found some of the speed drills annoying.
