Basically, you can't go wrong with Asus. http://usa.asus.com/index.asp The board that Maradon mentioned is an Asus as well.
No AMD-based exhortations, please.
Oh yeah, one that uses single-sided 256 megs PC133 modules... [ 01-08-2002: Message edited by: Mightion Defensor ]

Yes, you can.
They make ALi Magick chipsets.

Can anyone recommend a good Celeron/P3 board? (Be damned if I'm gonna make my mother's PC a P4. )No AMD-based exhortations, please.

I know you have your reasons... but aren't you trying to save money here? Duron is, in many ways, far superior to the Celeron... plus the parts are cheaper.
If you're trying to spend less and get more, go with AMD. That's all I'm saying... but I'm sure you have your reasons.
But, since you asked...:

Note: I won't buy the XP, but I'm just saying...
I already own an Thunderbird 1ghz and the performance boost won't be very noticable... atleast not in EQ and CS.
kegwenap: *gawks*
I just realized that I can afford an XP 1900+ if I get the k7s5a...
Techie friend: umm
Friend: dude
Friend: still though
Friend: why would you want an XP 1900+, if you already have a 1 Ghz?
Friend: it wouldnt boost performance very much right now
kegwenap: Novelty?
kegwenap: =p
Friend: true.....but you could also wait a while
kegwenap: I need to be saving money, anyway.
Friend: and get it later, or get somethign even better
So, um, I think I'm going to buy said ECS board.
Anything is better than an ALi chipset... especially a broken one.

Go here:Epox mobos
Go for the EPOX EP-8KHA+ VIA Apollo KT266A (VT8366A)
Or go to one of the other good mobos on newegg.

I'll run it by my p33pz... but I'd also like to be able to tell them WHY you shot down the ECS board.

It really wasn't designed for XP anyway, so you'd be better off with the Soyo or the EPOX as both have had excellent revies and use a new chipset released to better optimize the XP processor (They use the same chipset). It's your choice, I believe the SOYO is a little better than the EPOX, but mostly in things like RAID and such, which you may or may not need (all depends on what you use).
But the Soyo Dragon is tempting...
Non-Intel chipsets? I don't think so... any P3 boards out there still use Intel chipsets?

Anyway, what's wrong with the ECS board OTHER than the fact that it isn't a "proven" brand? My friend is dying to know... [ 01-09-2002: Message edited by: Kegwen Tabibito ]
Just avoid the A7A266, yo. =)

nForce owns you. ASUS mobo with ASUS gForce3 I'm just waiting for one that supports USB2 and ATA133
If I had the money, I'd buy a GF3 Ti500, Soyo SY-K7V Dragon Plus, Athlon XP 2000+, and stick with my SB Live X-Gamer... oh wait, I have unlimited cash in this scenario...an Audigy Platinum.
I need to replace my motherboard NOW, but other upgrades can wait til I'm working again.

The fact that it isn't a "proven" brand is what's wrong with it. You buy from a company that you know makes good products, you don't have to worry about them not working, because you know they do. If you want to go with an less widely known brand to save a few bucks, go for it. If it works, great. If not, will you be SoL? Do you know for sure? That's the difference.
Your friend seems to take the view that until it's proven to him something doesn't work, he'll buy it. I take the view that until it's proven to me it does work, I won't buy it. I think I'll have far less headaches in the long run.
