ly·can·thrope
n.
A werewolf.
A person affected with lycanthropy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Greek lukanthropos : lukos, wolf; see wkwo- in Indo-European Roots + anthrpos, man.]

God Zeus once disguised himself as a traveler and sought hospitality in the court of the vicious Arcadian King Lycaon. The King recognized the god and tried to kill him. He served him human flesh. God Zeus understood the terrible trick and did not eat. Outraged, He destroyed the palace and condemned Lycaon to spend the rest of his life as a wolf.

This mythology was the origin of the word "Lycanthrope" which is used to describe the werewolf phenomenon. (Greek lykos - wolf, and anthropos - man.)

Therefore, lycanthrope DOES INFACT mean only werewolf. There were other were-creatures in mythos and legends, but they went under different names and came from either Africa or Asia or Australia (Leopards, hyena, etc.,)

Anthropomorphic would be the correct term in the 'furry', or anthropomorphist, community, I am fairly sure. However, Khyron would know, he's spouted the word I am thinking of many times.

English and Greek are far from 'standard human', and they are also spoken languages too. Now, since you decided to use English, you can't just get a superiorty complex over it and say you are above the rules and everyone must therefore understand what you mean, no matter how craptastically chosen the wording is.

You're welcome to try and point out how I am wrong.

I am well aware of the people at lycanthrope.org. However, they hardly have the power to override hundreds of years of history and etymology in the making of a word. You have the right to call yourself what you want, just do NOT attempt to ratify the english language on your whims and get indignent when someone proves otherwise. We have definitions for many words already, whether indo-european or austro-pacific in history.

Also, Mr. P, to presume is to have not researched into the [areas] you are presuming about. I, on the otherhand, have done plenty of linguistical and anthropological studies into lycanthropy and anthropomorphism as much as my station currently allows.

In closing, neener.

1) Yes, furryism and by direct association lycanthropy is and forever will remain nothing more than a fantasy. That's why furries only look good when they're animated, while live-action furries like those depicted in movies turn stomachs.

3) No, it's quite possible to rise from death. It's called cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and it's done pretty much daily.
