I can say that it's better than Legend of Mana....
I didn't care for it simply because it was too -easy-, actually... it is possible to arrange training battles between two groups of your own forces. Nothing wrong with that, except that you can set neither, one, or -both- of those teams to Computer control, and they still get XP. Meaning you could powerlevel your own army without even sitting in front of the game. I'd set both teams to Comp control, start the fight, then go out and mow the lawn. Come back half an hour later, start a new battle, set to comp control, go play Ultima Online (the hot thing at the time). Lather, rinse, repeat.
For a great tactical RPG, give Front Mission 3 a spin. Even better, if you know any Japanese and have a modified PSX, get a hold of Front Mission 2. Or, for a quickie but a goodie, try the original Vandal Hearts- a winner of a game if there ever was one.

Own it...too easy once you get Salamader...especially with 2 people But a pretty hard game if you don't aim for Vandelier class
But thanks for the info about Tactics Ogre
