Mine, while not trying for it, achieved a dark violet stripe around the middle of my hair (which goes down to my nose or so) and my roots went to a light baby blue. It's all over the place.

It actually is, but vexed me for a few days after someone asked me how I did it. I like to profess myself as being good with all aspects of hair dying (a small hobby of mine 
). I realized it was because of how my hair was bleached, and how it had grown out and been cut since then.

Sure. From my own personal experiance, Raw Color has worked best (however, it is the only hair dye I have used besides Special Effects. (both available at Hot Topic for about 14$ a bottle which should cover hair down just below your shoulders)).
Punkassgear has Punky hair color, which I have not used, for only 10$ a bottle. So if you try this stuff, tell me how it turns out
Now, for how to dye it (with minimal mess);
Step One The Extra Shit
You already have the hair dye (for a dark blue hue, I suggest Peek-A-Blue if using Raw Hair Color), what next? Well, since you want blue highlights on black hair, you need black hair first. Then, after dying it black (using some small kit you can find at stores like RiteAid or SafeWay) you still need some things to make it go easier. What you'll need are;
Step Two The Process
On the day you will dye it, you must make sure not to use conditioner in any sort on your hair, trust me. Next, when you finally are ready to dye, make sure you are in a bathroom with a mirror and a showerstall. You should be wearing a shirt that you don't mind getting rid of (or having blue all over) that you can take off without pulling it over your head, or that you do it without a shirt on.
Put on the latex gloves and apply vaseline all over your ears and scalp line. Wipe off the gloves and take the bottle of blue dye and pour a good amount on your hand. Rub your hands together to make sure it is evenly applied on both hands, and then start rubbing it in, starting at the roots and going down. Make sure to work it in to all of your hair. Once you are done with that, put the bottle away (or throw it away more likely) and get everything put away and take the gloves off.
Step Three The Magic!
Now you just wait for it to set, I would recommend letting it set in for 2hrs if you want it to STAY, adjust the time it remains in your hair before washing it out to make it last longer or come out quicker.
Then, you shower. Use regular shampoo (without any conditioner and whatnot) and be prepared to turn BLUE. Rinse until the water comming out of your hair turns to a very pale blue, or even turns clear. At this point, whip out the loofa and lava soap and be prepared to scrub like mad. Don't spend more than 30 minutes scrubbing per day, or you'll go raw, and it will hurt. Also, be prepared for everything you touch to be blue until the next day. Make sure you use a blue towel.
After a few days of scrubbing, you should be back to normal color, but with blue highlights (bluish hue) to your hair.
Step Four The End!
Be prepared to be forced to scrub everything you turned blue with comet or ajax until it turns back to normal. Light skin stains can be removed with dishwashing soap. Use rubbing alcohol or non-acetone finger nail polish remover to remove dye from stained skin.

Heh, yeah. I've done the hair-dye thing before but for the black/blue bit I'm gonna have to do it myself. Good tips.

When getting your hair to like you after bleaching, tons of conditioner will work wonders. I love Bed Head's Tigi stuff, it worked wonders (I remember it smelt like fruit and was pinkish).

And costs a fortune! haha Tigi Bed head is good though, i got tons of the stuff while working at the clothes show The whole lot would have cost me about £60 - £70!
