Can anyone recommend styles I could look into? I'm not interested in anything strictly sports, like Judo, for example.
What I'd really like is a hard, external style meant for actual combat rather than making pretty patterns in the air with various body parts while contemplating paraplegiacs clapping.
Conversely, anyone know a good soft, internal style my wife might enjoy. Preferably with real combat potential, but made for a smaller, less aggressive person whose main goals are self-discipline and fitness.
I seem to remember a bunch of people were into martial arts around here.
Thanks!

Starr, after shooting the Drill Sargent in the leg: "I never plan to be unarmed."
also it might be hard to find a teacher, i found out wbout my master by chance and he only teaches privately (which is good)
(dun dun DUN!)
I'll look into that one.
Can you tell me much about it? Is it kick-oriented, or is the leg power directed at other skills?
I ask because real fighting is rarely done by keeping one's distance to kick.

I had to look that up . . . it really scares me that you know that.

Well, I'm a big Tekken fan, so I've heard of lots of fighting styles.
Nowhere near all of 'em, but a lot nonetheless.

As a basketball player, middle-distance sprinter, and fencer, my leg muscles were quite good, so . . .I'll look into that one.

most forms are done (realy) low to the ground crouching and the like
and its not mainly kicking, its more like "what best fits in here" sort of combat
i have not learned much so thats all i can tell you, but i can look into it more for you
If you could find a link, I'd be somewhat less than eternally though considerably more than momentarily grateful.

"Sentow, duck!"
"WHOA! What the hell was that?!"
"Hehe..."

"haha, u suxx0rz."

The place where I learned was USTF and ITF certified, and one of my instructors was Joe Bosse, the North American sparring Champion of... '92, I think. That was a hell of a school, stayed with it all the way up to my First Dan black belt... then one of the other instructors got it out for me.
Anyway, I as well recommend Tae Kwon Do. It just depends on the facility and competence of the instructors.
Find a United States or International Tae Kwon Do school, and you'll do great. My brother took a course that was ATF, and it completely sucked...
