I'm getting this error, EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to switch from 1400x1050 to any resolution. 1400x1050 is my regular windows display resolution. Here's the error :

You have selected a non-optimal screen resolution setting for your LCD display panel.

It pops up with an error EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME. Is there ANY way to fix that?

Don't change the resolution. Or use a different default resolution. Or contact the computer/video card manufacturer to see if they have updated video drivers for XP and your video card/LCD.

Me, I like 1024x768 just fine on my 15" laptop LCD.

I use windows on 1400x1050.

I play Return to castle wolfenstein on 800x600.

I play Aliens Vs Predators on 1024 x 768.

Other games use even stranger resolutions.

I have tried both the Dell drivers, and the nVidia Detonator XP drivers. It happens no matter what driver I run on.

What happens when you run Windows on something other than 1400x1050 ? Since that is such a rare reslution to use, it seems the issue most likely will lie with the drivers and not having been tested at that level. You'll want to contact nVidia with a bug report.

Kanid, it's something Winblows Ex Pee is doing on its own.

1400x1050 is the 'optimal' resolution for a laptop LCD screen. Winblows recognises this and gives me a warning whenever I switch from 1400x1050 (Desktop resolution) to any other resolution (Which is what I use when gaming).

1400x1050 is a standard resolution. Standard resolutions are 4x3 variants.

1280x960 is standard, 1280x1024 isn't.

However 1400x1050 isn't a 'normal' resolution that you find on a system. That is definately an oddball res. Dunno what to tell you other than (1) Don't use it and (2) Win2k doesn't do that to me.

Sounds like something XP inherited from ME. (the handholding for stupid people bit)

Doesn't sound like you're having a real problem, just the annoying warning message that keeps popping up. I'm guessing it doesn't have the "don't warn me about this in the future" check box, and unless you can find something that's probably hiding on one of an endless number of XP support pages at the M$ site you're screwed.

I'm not saying it isn't standard (aspect ratio wise) I'm saying you are the only person I know who uses it. Normally I see 1024x768, 1280x1024 or 1600x1200

Whether it is standard, optimal, rare, or the setting Moses told you to use doesn't make a difference however. What makes a difference is does this ONLY happen when using Windows in that mode, or in other modes too. If it ONLY happens in that mode, then either don't use that mode, or don't use XP.

Seriously, try another setting, like 1600x1200 or 1280x960. You can try checking the VKB articles at http://support.microsoft.com/ and search for your exact error message and see what you get.

I run XP on my 15" LCD laptop, in 1024x768, works great, no error messages, and it doesn't advise me of any "optimal" resolutions. I don't even have your selection listed, only 1024x768, 1156x864, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 so I'm guessing the resolution, and the error message, is due to your drivers.

The reason that happens is because LCD screens, the way they're made, are best only at one specific resolution. This is because the pixels on an LCD screen are ACTUALLY physically there, they're not just projected like on a monitor.

If you adjust away from the optimal resolution, the screen will need to start doubling-up or dropping pixels, and you'll end up with an irregularly blocky display.

If you want to get rid of it, try disabling your monitor driver (not your video card driver!) and replacing it with a "Standard VGA" monitor. That message isn't coming from the video driver, it's coming from the monitor driver when the video driver says "hey we're switching to this resolution", the monitor responds "that's not a good idea, I look like shit at that resolution".

Thank you Drysart. I was certain it wasn't my video card driver, I'll give that a try sometime.

Cool. Now why don't I get such an "optimal" setting, nor anything bearing any resemblance to 1400x1050 ?

There goes M$ ya know they are jsut tring to protect your moniter. From what? I can do all resolutions from 800x600 (since 640x480 dont exsist in display porperties anymore) to 2048x1536 which is the highest the video card can do but my moniter only shows 1600x1200 parts I move the mouse down and around and the screen itself moves like I magnified my screen. I also can use 120 hz at 800x600 160hz at 640x480 I got a 17" flat moniter (the CRT is FLAT instead of the normal curved making it look niiiice)

BTW you cansut off that error message but it requires you to do some changes, You can always try Windows XP FAQ on NT compatiable but I cannot get EQ to DISPLAY over 60 hz refresh rate on my Radeon, it is starting to piss me off. Unless anyone's got a IDEA, Powerstripper dont work.

Because your vid card or your monitor driver doesn't say you support it....

I get: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x867, 1152x864, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1600x900, 1600x1024, 1920x1080, 1920x1200, 1920x1440 and 2048x1536 Not all of thoes are standard and over half can't be done by the monitor I have... My old vid card listed nothing but standards and stopped at the 1280x960 entry.
