Well, welcome to the club of "people who fell ripped-off by Hideo Kojima because you don't play as Snake the entire game"
Don't tell me that really bothers people. The series is called Metal Gear, not Iroquis Pliskin, after all
Mad props to Mr. Kojima for the nod to Escape From New York
I'm unhappy about how empty the Codec channels are. With only or two people to talk to, I've found myself yearning for the days when Snake had a whole building full of people supporting him. It makes the game feel lonelier.
Which is probably the point, what with the whole one-man stealth mission thing
As far as gameplay goes, I don't like getting royally fucked every time I'm spotted. In MGS it wasn't really a hassle, but now, one slip-up will get you killed or, at the very least, eat away five minutes of your time while you hide in a locker. One extreme to the other.
I can't put my finger on it, but fighting seems gummier somehow. I think the challenge is just higher... or maybe it's that I have nothing to fight with besides that dinky pistol so far
My only other complaint thus far is the inordinant number of beautiful Japanese women who can be found on posters throughout the game. It's getting a little distracting
I, for one, like Raiden. He's trying so hard to be the legendary covert op, even though he's just an overeager kid (who falls on his ass when he runs over slick floors; hehe!). I'm only a little ways into the "Plant Chapter," but I think he'll make a great foil for S... Iroquis Pliskin.
I also like the new approach to the story. In MGS, the actual mission was very different from the object that Campbell provides, but of course the player doesn't know that.
This time, the player saw everything going on first hand. So I felt pretty cool when I said, "Ha HA!" as the Colonel was briefing Raiden.
Which was dumb, since knowing the MG series, everything I think I know is bunk, anyway...
Finally, MGS2 wins the award for best introductory cinematic in a video game, ever.
I'll shush now.
The plot is great,. I think Penny arcade summed it up pretty nicely.
"We've made a list of everything we like about MGS2, And now we've crossed out everything we can't tell you about it without spoiling the game..." "Now let's see what we're left with..." "Nothing..."

Never assume anything until you've beat the game.
