A lot of people have differing opinions on her expanded role in the movie as well as her acting abilities in the movie.

I for one thought the edit to the story was seamless and fit very well based upon the history of Arwen and Aragorn. I was also pretty astonished to see Liv come forth with that womanly resonating voice and her fierce determination. I thought she embodied the kind of woman who could capture someone like Strider's heart perfectly.

On a second note, I was *really* lookin, and I think Liv was doing her own riding in a lot of those scenes! Those weren't no easy turns she was performing =)

Don't know for sure if Liv was doing all her own riding, but I know she stated that in some of the shots where the camera is centered on Frodo, she is played by a man dressed up, and the scenes with her holding him are her with a small person/child. So I take it she did do most of her own riding which it seems like all the actors really got into their roles in the filming. Heard Viggo(Strider/Aragorn) really got into sword fighting, even to the extent of treating his blades with as much care and devotion as a real warrior would.

I am of like mind with you, Piper. It did fit very well into the story and I'm glad Arwen was depicted as something more than "Hello, I'm here." In the Lord of the Rings book, she felt more like support cast and a subplot, but in the movie, she was given more life and Liv captured the role very well.

All in all, I enjoyed the movie immensely

Viggo did take his role quite seriously, up to and including one point where he busted up a tooth during filming ..told them "cant we put it back on with crazy glue or something till after the filming?"

Nothing was going to stop him even for a moment also did many of his own stunts and such in the fight scenes

She did very well.
Tolkien himself was quoted as saying the women in the book would need to be reworked if there were ever a movie made. And the Tolkien estates have a heavy hand. If they hadn't liked her part it wouldn't have been in there.

Elvish spoken by her was beautiful. Nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Actually, the Tolkien estate has NO say whatsoever in the movie. Tolkien himself, in a bit of shortsightedness, sold off all movie rights in perpituity to his works back in the 60s for around $50,000.

In fact, the Tolkien estate has come out strongly against these movies, and Christopher Tolkien, the current Big Cheese at the estate, has disowned one of his brothers who stated that he was looking forward to seeing the movies.

In other words they are pissed that daddy dearest sold it off and they can't get in on the money the movie is going to make. So instead of enjoying it for what it is they are being stupid about it.

fifty grand was a lot of money in the 60s, especially for a writer.

Her "extended" role, while may be so for the novel was certainly not in the movie.

Well done, very short, people who get into a huff about such a minor creative tweek are just a bit to uptight.
