The whole finale dealt with the "meaning of life." Spike subscribes to a philosophy that there is no meaning to it aside from whatever attachments you make for yourself. Without those attachments, you're lost, directionless, purposeless, like living in a dream. The only way to wake up from the dream is to die.
Note what Spike does to the Syndicate; he doesn't destroy it. He leaves it lost without its leader. He believes that's a fate worse than death.
Anyway... Spike's dead. He had nothing left in the dream, so he finally let himself awake.
