don't have a car yet I'd say go for the car *shrug* but then you have to pay insurance, licensing etc...it keeps sucking your money! Computer sucks your money in a different way though...upgrade, new game, upgrade, new game, upgrade etc etc, hehe. But, like I said, if you already have a comp, I'd go for the car.

The car. It takes you to the computer shop. More importantly, it takes you to the grocery and to beer.

Nope, you never do!

Personally, I say save up for a car. But then you're talking to someone with no car, but a Thunderbird 1.2Ghz with 768Mb of RAM.

Or... you might be able to afford both...

Just get a car on it's last legs, that will last you a couple months for arround $200 or so, drive it into the ground, until it dies, sell it to a salvage yard for about $50, and get a new one. Also get AAA service so you know you can always get a tow for when the clunker dies.

Several of my friends did this throughout college. Worked quite well for them.

Of course, it does lead to less predictability in your transportation, but predictability is boring.

get a car first, then get a AMD TBird/Duron/Athlon/other fairly new AMD chip, because Intel is teh suxx0rz.

Get yourself a decent used car. Don't save up for a new one, as the loans will kill you later (if you could afford a new car outright, you wouldn't be asking this question). Figure it'll run you between $2K and $5K. Also, have a mechanic your parents trust give a thorough inspection to any used car you plan to buy. (It's very important that the mechanic be trustworthy. Otherwise he could advise you to buy a crappy car just so he can collect on the repair costs.)

After that, you can look into a computer. If you have any reason whatsoever to hold a job (and most people do), you'll need a car sooner or later. And depending on where you are and who your friends are, you may want a car even before you need one.

As for the computer itself, should you go that way, don't spend any more than $1.2K on anything. Figure out what hardware you want, and either have a system custom built by someone reliable or order from a company with a strong recent reputation (right now Dell is on the uphill and HP is on the downhill). DO NOT buy a prebuilt system in a store.

Car first. Buy it used, look for a Honda or Toyota if you want a sedan, a '95-98, preferably under 50,000 miles. That'll last you ten years, no problem.

If you want a truck/SUV, be prepared to spend more, and go domestic. Foreign trucks = the suxxorz.

Then, bite the mullet(tee hee) and upgrade the computer. An AMD. You can't upgrade from a Celeron to a P4 without buying a new mobo anyway, so you might as well get a decent chip while you're at it.

Any questions? Feel free to PM me, and I'll do my best to answer them.
