In the strictest sense of the word, yes, it is sexist. But being sexist, especially in this case, is not a bad thing.
Is it wrong to not hit a woman? No it isn't wrong, men really shouldn't hit women on a general basis. HOWEVER, don't allow harm to come to you or those you love just because of a woman either.

You need to specify if you mean technically or socially for me to answer.
From that definition, I'd say no, don't be sexist. However, there is more to it than just that. ANY treatment of a woman differently because of her sex is being sexist.
I wouldn't strike a woman because she is a woman. I would open a door for a woman. I would stand while the woman is being seated. There are many ways I would treat a woman different than a man simply BECAUSE she is a woman.
If she took offsense at my actions, I would appreciate being notified of the offense first, before taking my head off for trying to treat her like a lady.
Men and women are different. I love being a woman, and I love both sexes. I am not a feminist, and I do not think that women are downtrodded in today's society. I think that it is absolutely wonderful when a man opens doors for me, pulls out my chair, speaks respectfully around me, etc.
That to me is the good side of sexism. Being treated like a lady, and respected because I am a lady.
The bad side of sexism is the old patriarchal view that women are only good for making babies and cleaning house. Feminism has its good points, it gave us the right to vote, and we are viewed more as equals in society when it comes to the working world. To me however, sexism is easily reversable. Femi-Nazis get on my nerves. The whole "man hating women's club" thing.
In my opinion, both sexes have their strengths and their weaknesses. One sex is not better than the other. They are better at different things, yes.
For instance, I personally couldn't see myself voting for a female President. That is sexist of me, because I feel that men are best suited for that job. I don't apologise for it either, I suppose I am old-fashioned that way. I wouldn't want to see women on the front lines of battle. There are many reasons for them not to be there, I approve of them serving in the military, just not in combat positions. My reasons for that would make this post too long, so I won't expound on it.
So, sexisim in small doses is a good thing. Moderation in all things. Being an extremist is a bad thing.
If a woman attacks me or a friend of mine unprovoked, you bet I am going to defend myself. Same with a man.

IMO poking is far worse than hitting because its WAY up there on the annoyance scale 
(most of the people who try to get in a fight with me hit like a small child anyways)
