It must end. I am tired of every girl on TV thinking they are a kung-fu master, I'm tired of every girl I meet in real life thinking they are a bad ass and can threaten people, and above all else, I'm tired of seeing 200lb males acting scared of a 125lb female, I don't care what she can throw, YOU ARE MORE POWERFUL THAN SHE IS! Uhh OOOOoook.
I am 240 pounds. I Have taken Judo, Jujitsu, TaeKwonDo, and I teach a self defense class.
In my TaeKwonDo class there is a girl who weighs maybe 125. She IS more powerful than me. Why?
Well first she can kick my ass. I have shown her to much LOL. It is like fighting a wolverine. Quick and brutal.
secondly she is modivated. She has been attacked before and had to learn to defend herself.
And lastly.. This is the most important.

I hate Women's Entertainment, Oxygen, and Lifetime channels...

I simply loathe them...

Oxygen is nearly 24/7 Xena, except for some News Program ("World Events, from a woman's point of view").

Lifetime is full of Lifetime original movies (about 25 of them fall into "Smalltown Abused Woman gets revenge on/manages to leave an abusive lover, even when the community overlooks her need" categories)

But that's my opinion.

No, I see what he's saying and it's a legitimate point.

Femenists are pushing so hard to destroy the "traditional female" archetype (that hasn't been an archetype since the late '50's, btw) that they've created a new, polar opposite archetype that's really no better.

Umm..

1> Xena was made to be camp.. not taken seriously.. it was made purely for entertainment.

2> Only a certain type of feminist does this.. not all that want equal rights go the route of overdoing it..

3> I feel sorry for you Blind Swordsman.. where I come from.. that isnt a standard as to how women act.

Sorry.. I do get tired of stereotyping, I hear enough of it from both sides of the spectrum. Yes there are alot of assholes and sheep in the world.. but please dont group people in categories.. there are alot of 'groups' out there.. but there are also alot of individuals as well.. Take that into consideration. I happen to like Xena.. Yes I think Lucy Lawless is a goddess, yes I think the fighting choreography is cool (only because honestly I dont see MOST of what goes on in those types of shows to hold true within the laws of earths gravity and whatnot ) and yes I think those shows are entertaining as all schmitz. Its all a matter of taste really.. Those who take it seriously.. are just as bad as the people who take soap operas seriously I pay them no mind. Again Blind Swordsman.. I do feel for you that this seems to be a characteristic of many of the women you meet irl.. but it is a big world out there. You'll hopefully meet alot of individuals that will break the stereotypical molds that society has set these days.

Hmm, I'm pretty much like Azziza, minus the teaching part as far as martial arts go, plus a couple weapons training programs and military-class self-defense. Still, there's few women who 'terrify' me, as per the nutshot weakness, I've learned to counteract that, both with a leg block and a metal cup(ever see what happened to Chyna when she tried doing a nutshot on a guy wearing one? ). There's a couple women blackbelts still able to defeat me in my class, but if I was going all out, I'd likely cripple them, or worse.

But that's not the point I think Blindswordsman was trying to make here. I too, am very tired of Charlie's Angels and Destiny's Child. Sure, women are equal to men now(perhaps more equal), but that doesn't mean they have to flaunt it 24/7. I'm all for equality, but women are NOT better than men and vice versa.

Now is that all naturally true? Or have you made it true by striving to fit into the accidentally created anti-female archetype?

I'm not saying you're a liar, I'm just saying a very large number of modern women say things very much like what you said in the above quote.

More equal? *smile* The workforce doesnt reflect equality too well.. =/ See that is my major qualm.. yes I know men on a whole are bigger and stronger.. its a physical truth for most cases.. But hell.. ALOT of companies STILL pay men more than women.. for doing an equal amount of work.. Thats the unfair part to all this. Again.. point to Charlie's Angels.. that is camp.. its always been camp.. not to really be taken seriously. =P

I..used to think I knew how to defend myself...when your 250 pound brother used to pick on you 24/7, you get kind of confident about what you can do against other people..

Then when I dyed my hair...a few girls that I had had trouble with before, ("BITCH" and "QUEER" being screamed at me during lunch two weeks previous)...and I didn't know how to react, really. I had walked in that morning to go to the restroom, and immediately I hear them go "OH MY GOD" in response to my hair...then the taunts when I get back. "You're a geek, not a freak!"...and I was kind of surprised, I guess.

I got cornered before first hour, where they proceeded to repeat their taunts and general harrassment...again before third hour, and fourth. I was sick of it...and I really didn't know what to do.

Heh. The 'leader' got transferred on Tuesday. The sheep won't go anywhere without the shephard. So I guess I just lucked out. Or she did...I was quite literally ready to beat the shit out of her...

I got that too.

Then I went into a homicidal rage on a former friend who had become one of said shepherd-bitches.

Then I became HORRENDOUSLY SCARY, for some reason. I don't know what it is. I'm unapproachable, I look like I'm going to tear your head off, I don't know, but I don't like it. There's a downside to that stereotype, too, and that's that you don't make many friends if you're not horribly outgoing. Which I'm not. I just sit back and look scary. In fact, my first test of friendship is whether or not you have the balls to actually walk up and talk to me. Most people don't. Therefore, I am a lonely, lonely girl.

Though I transferred and grew some spine myself. Which is good. Though I don't want to turn into a scary person any more than I already am.

I have a fair circle of friends that I talk to, but I could do quite fine by myself. I do rarely on occasion call them, but for the most part I don't. I also live with a 250+ pound bully, but instead of beating him, its more of a pain tolerance thing - I have yet to know anyone that can beat me at Bloody Knuckles. The only reason the "Average female makes 20% less than the average male" is that a higher number of females are homemakers. the only reason that the "Average female makes 5-10% less in the same job as the average male" is that there is a higher number of females without job specific college education in a carrer than males (think english majors, 20-30 years ago, females in a major other than english, psych, or nursing was considered out of the ordinary). They arn't geting discriminated against, no one is holding them down, the numbers just haven't caught up to reality yet.

What I'm trying to say by the XENA effect is that the trend of strong female characters on TV, coupled with the media's persuasive influence pushing the female form as the only attractive human form (i.e. attractive female bodys getting much more airtime than attractive male bodys) is creating a new breed of young women who belive that they are "the definitive shit".

I do not agree. The "strong female leads" on tv are 9 out of 10 times shallower than the week female leads of yesteryear, and the media's pushing of the female form is only causing women to think that they arn't sexy unless they look EXACTLY like that.

the XENA effect is life imitating TV, and having adverse effects on the female population.

Yes I know there are women out there who can kick any guy's butt. But for every really good female fighter you could tell me about I could prolly point out five good male fighters. And, let's be honest with ourselves, you can't kick ass in platform shoes.

Wiccans tend to be very close friend types.

In school I tended to be the one others would make friends with to get shelter from the bullies...that gentle giant image and all. I was in very few fights because I was not much on physical fighting...and the few I was goaded into I ended up breaking 2 ribs and fracturing two others on one guy. Another had a fairly good limp for 3 months. I am from the school of nothing is worth fighting fair about and you will not stand back up and swing at me again if I get you on the ground. Of course I had one try to get his friends to help him out and they saw him on the ground sobbing for help and left him...ahhhh...true friends. The few ass whoopins I got let me know that I was not a good fighter.

You know, you're right... One of the problems with longrunning adventerous characters and storylines is that they tend to develop so many personal quirks, and build up over time. It's true with RPG characters and groups, and with TV shows.

You can start off with "A human Swordsman," and end up with "A master swordsman, who discovered his angelic nature, dabbled in all schools of magic, fathered the child of the root of all evil (and later was forced to kill that child), met all deities, saved the world eight times over, and has recieved so many blessings, been the victim of so many curses, and acquired so many artifacts, it's not even funny. No longer does he wear a suit of armor and hold a sword and shield, but he wears the Bracers of Bargaron, the Gauntlets of Dread, the Breastplate of the Enlightened, the Vambraces of Virtue, the legplates of the Legions of Light, the Warboots of Wailing, and weilds the Sword of Eternal Kings and The Tower Shield of Divine Protection."
(Not literally all these things, but all this emotional and physical baggage piles up, as does the power or skill of the character)

True, this doesn't happen all the time, and most of the time, the character is forced to retire, or the show ends, or something, but, in Xena, all too often each episode is more profound and all encompassing than the last, and leaves greater permanent changes upon Xena and her companions.

It usually doesn't happen in D&D or any RPG with a DM, ST, or GM, but in FFRP (Free-form, not Final Fantasy...), where a player will occasionally make a storyline, it does.

Play FFRP with the same group of people continuously for 4 years or more, and you'll see what I'm talking about.
