Man.
After a conversation regarding favorite video games, I was fired up to play Final Fantasy Tactics s'more tonight. I was determined to end up with a Samurai who could Teleport before the evening was out.
But.
My Playstation still stubbornly refuses to work properly. Oh sure, it gets my hopes up by letting me play one or two whole battles. But then it crushes my dreams as it locks up... again.
So anyway.
If I had to make a point with this post (that isn't required here, is it?), I would ask if it's possible to repair/replace the laser... thing... that reads the CD. Damn techno-babble.
If it is possible, what would be a guesstimate as to the price of parts and labour for having that done?

(sigh) Just reason #249 to get a PS2.

Or you can get one of those cute lil' PSOnes.

It'd be cheaper to get a whole new PSX than to replace the internal workings of your current one.

I'd shell out the extra cash for a PS2.

True... but I'm not going to spend more than... 30 or 40 dollars to repair/replace my existing Playstation when I plan on buying a PS2 eventually anyway

Problem is, I'm pretty sure you can't save on the PS2.

PSX memory cards go by blocks. PS2 memory cards go by kilobytes.

Two different formats. A PSX game will use blocks instead of kilobytes.

Doesn't the PS2 have problems playing a lot of PSOne games?

Oddly enough, turning it on its side might help.

You can still save and upload PS1 files for PS1 games on an old card, even in a PS2. But you can't save PS2 game files on an old card.

There are 9 or 10 games that never saw Stateside release that the PS2 won't run, but aside from that, it's completely backwards compatible.

I'll try that sideways thingy, ArchAngel ^_^

PSOnes kick ass over the older PSXs. They just look a whole lot better and are loads smaller and lighter. Which works well for me because I'm constantly going back and forth between my parents' houses.

The only bad thing is that the PSOnes are smaller, and sometimes the writing on a game, like with CC, is hard to see on that screen.

You might check Amazon.com's Marketplace

I bought both my PSOne and screen new, but that's cause I knew I'd use it a lot and wanted brand new. Plus I had the blunt to throw around.

Sometimes you can get stuff for less than retail off Amazon.com's Marketplace, or you can go to half.com and see if they have it cheaper there.

Turning it on it's side or, more effectively, upside down actually works. More often than not, it's the slide mount that the laser is set in that goes. Friction over time causes the wear and tear on the slide tracks. Turning the deck upside down reduces the friction, allowing the laser mount to move smoother.

I know it sounds wierd, but I do it myself and it works

Go here, you'll find everything you need to get your old psx up and running again.
Oh and buying a new lens for $50 is alot cheaper than buying a new system, if you can't get it working using the guides on the page. Also try turning your psx upsidedown after starting it, it moight be that the guide rails on the lens might have worn down. The older ones had plastic ones unlike the newer models that have metal ones.

YEp this happened to me when I first got psx, i got it used and it froze every 5 minutes, then we found it didnt when near air conditioning, and this led to that, and we were like AHHH THATS IT. So we sent it back for new one. Anyway, reason upside down also helps on OLD systems: there is ventilation on the bottom, but the older psx dont have sides open.
