Scared myself with this thought today...

Now that we're at war and he doesn't have to pull punches, Osama bin Laden has been playing to Afghanistan to rally them; pushing the religious zealot's card. His war has become "the will of Allah."

One of the things he made a point of was condemning the Afghani citizens that left the country; those that lived in the USA.

I live in Fremont, California. We have the highest Afghani population in the country--an item that's been receiving a bit too much press, recently. We're relatively close to a military base with a known nuclear arsenal. We're relatively close to the ocean, and to the main seaport of the west coast.

And now we're bombing Afghanistan.

Don't worry. Everyone, no matter where they live, always says that they're in an area that's #3 on the list of targets.

If bin Laden were to attack again, I doubt he'd bother with Fremont. He has favorite targets he likes to go after: The World Trade Center, the tunnels going into and out of Manhattan, the Space Needle, and LAX.

I live nowhere near a potential "target".

Unless of course I live on the top of a 'super secret underground world domination center' known only to the military and Bin Laden's bombing crew ...

I know exactly what you mean, it's like the local News is just dying for something to happen here...

"We've just recieved rumors from a... err... pretty reliable sources that Atlanta's Downtown Marta station may be a target for Afghan terrorists!"

"A man was apprehended last night at Turner stadium, believed to be a terrorist. His excuse for entering Turner Stadium is that he 'wanted to see a Braves game.'"

Heh, I've moved around so much there's a lot of places I've been to that are targets, the Space Needle being the closest and relatively most vulnerable in Seattle, but the Boeing fields would be an even better target for terrorists since it produces Air Force jets along with commercial liners.

"Now that he doesn't have to pull punches . . . ."

Since when has ubl ever pulled punches? That's just nonsense.

Major terror operations require a very long time to plan, and conspiracies with a lot of participants are inherently risky things. Now that the war has actually started, he's got the handicap of knowing America's gloves are off, and we're fighting it as a war rather than looking for evidence to a crime. It makes things tougher for ubl, not harder.

So don't worry, you're at least as safe as you were a month ago.

I live in East Coast NC, with 1 military base about 1 minute from my house and one 45 minutes. Camp Lejeune and Cherry point.

*shrug*

Im not worried...he isnt gonna go for some marine base not many have heard of. He is gonna go for big targets. He doesnt care about taking out the military, he cares about killing the americans. and taking out things like LAX and the Space needle, as Drys said, would accomplish that.

Isn't Lejeune the third largest Marine Corps base, after 29 Palms (99% desert, airfield and tank range) and Camp Pendleton?

Pretty sure it is. I lived in 29 palms for 3 years, that place was fooking huge.

And Cherry Point, which is nearly my damn backyard, is the largest Marine Corps Air Base. We have lots of planes and stuff here. Harriers and shiz

I attend school in the shadow of the Sears Tower. It could be argued that the Tower is now the biggest commercial structure in the US. Should the Sears Tower fall westward or straight down, it would block the Chicago river, and also destroy Chicago Union Station. Should it fall any other direction, it could possibly start a domino effect across the Loop - including the building I attend classes in. Then, there is the Hancock Building, which while is not near any place I live/work/study, could still cause significant damage if it were to fall. Then there is the fact that Chicago is a transportation center for both road, rail and air travel, one of the largest Internet Gigapops is in the Loop, and there is also a trading center here. Given that Bin Laden seems interested in disrupting our way of life, I'd say Chicago would be rather high on his list of places to strike.

Am I scared? Very much so.
Am I gonna let it affect my daily life? Trying not to.
