The songs that tell stories are always the most interesting to me, and those that tell of atypical tragedies or desperate helplessness have always struck a very morbid yet compelling chord with me. I don't know -why-, exactly... I don't consider myself either helpless or desperate; perhaps it's having known ones who were in situations of mortal desperation and my heart being torn by the witnessing of it.

This number is called 'Space Oddity', originally by David Bowie, redone by others including Natalie Merchant, whom I ordinarily can't stand. However this time she does an incredible job in singing a tale of haunting doom, that I can't help but listen to over and over and over.

...Ground Control to Major Tom...
...Ground Control to Major Tom...
...Take your protien pills, and put your helmet on...

Ground Control to Major Tom...
Commencing countdown; Engines on.
Check ignition, and may God's love be with you...

This is Ground Control to Major Tom.
You've really made the grade.
And the papers want to know who's shirts you wear.
Now it's time to leave the capsule- if you dare...

This is Major Tom to Ground Control,
I'm stepping through the door...
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way,
And the stars look very different today...

For here am I, sitting in my tin can,
Far above the world.
Planet Earth is blue,
And there's nothing I can do.

Though I've passed one-hundred-thousand miles,
I'm feeling very still.
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go...
Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows.

Ground Control to Major Tom,
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong!
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you...
...here am I, floating in my tin can,
Far above the world.
Planet Earth is blue,
And there's nothing I can do...

Did you ever see the video for that song? :-\ When the get to that line "Tell my wife I love her very much, she knows".... then show her in their place with another guy. (At least, that's what my not-so-reliable memory is telling me what they had done. It's been just a few years since I've seen it.)

And the 80's tribute:

Standing there alone
The ship is waiting
All systems are go
Are you sure?
Control is not convinced
But the computer has the evidence
"No need to abort"
The countdown starts

Watching in a trance
The crew is certain
Nothing left to chance
All is working
Trying to relax
Up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink"
Jokes Major Tom
The count goes on

CHORUS
4...3...2...1...
Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Calling calling home...

Second stage is cut
We're now in orbit
Stabilizers up
Running perfect
Starting to collect
Requested data
What will it affect
When all is done
Thinks Major Tom

Back at ground control
There is a problem
Go to rockets full
Not responding
"Hello Major Tom
Are you receiving
Turn the thrusters on
We're standing by"
There's no reply

CHORUS

Across the stratosphere
A final message
"Give my wife my love"
Then nothing more

Far beneath the ship
The world is mourning
They don't realize
He's alive
No one understands
But Major Tom sees
Now the life commands
This is my home
I'm coming home

Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Coming home...

Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Coming home...

Earth below us
Drifting falling
Floating weightless
Coming coming home...
Home...

Nub, nub me do.

Nub... nub... nub!
Nub is all doo need!

Peter Schilling's song was good.

But Bowie always has been and probably always will be one of my favorite artists. Always ahead of his time, he makes his music for the sake of the music, not for the masses.

Happiness is subjective, subject yourself to it whenever possible.
"A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams." - John Barrymore

Personally I didn't like David Bowie in or doing anything except Labyrinth. But I've always loved that song.

I prefer the Saigon Kick remake however.

Story songs are always the best songs for me, which is why I like the fantasy metal stuff. Is hard it's edgy, and it tells a story.

I'm also a glutton for the sappy Power Ballads of the 80's early 90's. i.e. Any Ballad by Steelheart makes me cry..

Angel eyes
You have angel eyes
Such a smile that lights up my life oh
You're a dream come true
Now I'm holding you
And I'll never, never let you go
I will never let you go

Funny, he scared the hell out of me in the Labyrinth when I was little.

Wait, I said this before. And you said you were going to eviscerate me because of that.

...oops...

I don't know how to be sexy. If I catch a girl looking at me and our eyes lock, I panic and open mine wider. Then I lick my lips and rub my genitals. And mouth the words "You're dead."

Steelheart - Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)

If you ever wanted to melt a girls heart growing up, that was the song to do it!

Queensryche - Operation:Mindcrime One of the best theme albums ever. You can picture the story in your head like you just saw it in a movie or read it in a book.

KISS - Music from the Elder One of the worst theme albums ever. It just plain sucked eggs.
