So the contenders...
Playstation 2. Final Fantasy X pretty much makes this a given, but I'd really hope there were more reasons on top of that. SSX Tricky, perhaps. If I knew whether or not we were getting an American release of Capcom vs. SNK 2 on here, then that would probably clinch it.
XBox. Wow. Nothing really compelling here, not for a while, anyway. The biggest appeal would be playing DOA3 naked, and the possibility of the big money PS2 titles showing up here (The souped up Metal Gear 2, for example, whatever it's called... Malibu Metal Gear, or Metal Gear Dream House, or whatever) and eliminating those reasons for a PS2. Plus, I'm in a unique situation to get an XBox and a shitload of games for... well, a shitload of money, but not -quite- so large of a shitload of money as Joe Normal off the street would have to pay for the same goods.
Gamecube- Don't you just love those crazy little italian bastards? Luigi finally in the spotlight, and I'm told it's not just a really sexy remake of the extraordinarily un-sexy Ghostbusters license that came out on the 8-bit NES well over a decade ago. ugh. If only they'd made twice as many copies of it as there were NES's in existance, it could easily have been the E.T. of the 8-bit generation, sinking the industry, perhaps forever. But I digress... 199$! Smash Brothers where you can play as Ice Climber! As one of the folks who can remember Ice Climber, I was the target demographic they were talking about when they said 'Market Game To Old Losers Who Get Hard Over Obsolete Kitsch'. Kameo: The Lost Something Or Other! It's a Rare title and was a tasty one at E3, so why not? Some Star Wars Game That Made People Wrech Their Shorts At The Nintendo Booth At E3! Didn't play it myself, but from the way people talked about it, you'd think that it made the Gamecube physically dispense either 1. Crack, or 2. Blowjobs whenever you completed a level. Yeah, okay, so I guess Gamecube's a given. God Bless Nintendo, those cooky pastel-colored sonsabitches.
Gameboy Advance- Castlevania is the compeller here. Being as how it was made by the folks who did Symphony Of The Night, and that to this day I still have to say grace whenever I sit down to -that- game, my prognosis is to take -two- of them and then call you when I'm sober. But what after that? Lots of remakes, and good ones at that, but I played Super Mario Bros. 2 to death and interment back when it was on the original NES, and I doubt the nostalgia from seeing it on a 2-inch screen would really stick. Same with Mario Kart, though 4-way individual-screen battle mode sounds mighty sexy. I need something other than Castlevania to get me to actually spend money on this thing, rather than just borrow it from the quirky Asian girl that I work next to.
Okay, that's all of them, I think. If anybody can dogpile more reasons for or against these things, short of stuff on par with, say, 'XBox sucks msDick', then by all means... make my mind up.
A friend of mine already has a PS2, this way we're covering both bases.
Now I couldn't sit down and play dreamcast for over 15 mins.
XBox: Must have list
- Big time boobie fighters 3
Gamecube: Must have list
- Star Wars!
- A fox, rabbit, frog, and falcon?!
- Plummers
I just got Final Fight One for my GBA (see earlier thread) - it is so leaps and bounds above the SNES version it's not funny. It's awe-inspiring... all those large sprites on the screen with no flicker or slowdown; I almost want to weep while playing it. It's probably the closest version to the arcade version we'll ever see.
Mario Kart: Super Circuit r0x0rs your b0x0rs, too. A four way battle mode would be more fun than could be contained. [ 09-30-2001: Message edited by: Mightion Defensor ]
Nintendo

Dreamcast
Game Boy
Game Boy Advance
Neo-Geo Pocket Color
Game Gear
PS2

And...my next purchase will be an XBox. Simply because it comes packaged with broadband support...a Hard Drive where I can save my games (WITHOUT a memory card), this will also have the ability to say, update sports games with the next year's roster or what not.
Ill get a Gamecube for Zelda, and MAYBE smash brothers. but thats it.

Yeah, I'm getting an Xbox too but it's really your taste in games. I think Halo, DOA3, Amped, Fuzion Frenzy, Project Ego, Unreal Championship, Cel Damage, Mad Dash Racing, Jet Set Radio Future, Gun Valkyrie, and some other stuff I'm forgetting are good enough reasons to get the system. (and the ice climbers thing I've heard it's really hard to control them, not trying to downplay the game because the original smash bros owned I'm just commenting).
yes

PS2-they have all the franchise games (FFX, MGS2, and some others) even though the system isn't as powerful as the others, still great games coming out for it. i really could care less for graphics.rather have good storyline and relplay factor. but thats my opinion.
Xbox-graphics do like nice, but the games...suck, most of the games are just remakes of others.the MGS one is what happend between MGS1 and MGS2. called MGSX.and THPSX (they like the X) graphics have been set higher, and some extra lvls were added. but why bother? its the same as THPS. they had that little problem of altering the graphics of the games at E3. and not even showing the box itself. they just had all the games running from a computer. not a great way to make people want the system
GC- kiddies games. almost all kiddie games. there are a couple out there that aren't for kids. nintendo has made people think all of thier games are just for kids. look at the new zelda! can you get any more cartoonish! the one before the kiddie zelda kicked ass.
and now if ayone has no clue of the abbrevations of all the games and systems. here they are
FFX-Final Fantasy 10(X)
MGS2(1)-Metal Gear Solid 2(1)
MGSX- Metal Gear Solid X
THPSX-Tony Hawk Pro Skater X
GC-Gamecube
PS2-Playstation 2
in case anyone is wondering, I have PS2.and several others.
As of right now nobody knows exactly what MGSX is but from stuff I've seen I'm guessing it's MGS2. THPSX the same as THPS? It has all the levels of THPS and THPS2 and 3 extra levels and enhanced graphics. At E3 they ran on computers because the Xbox wasn't ready yet, Nvidia hadn't been able to get the sound card out so they had to use computers. The lack of good games thing is your opinion completely because I can easily show you 20 games on the Xbox that I think will be good.

okie dokie. show me 20 games.
Too much anime coming out on DVD to not have a DVD player of some kind, so that's another reason to get the PS2.

Motiak had this to say about Robocop:
Halo, Oddworld, Unreal Championship, Gun Valkyrie, Tony Hawk 3, Battlefield 1942, Gun Metal, Project Gotham, Project K-X, DOA3, Amped, Fuzion Frenzy, Project Ego, Morrowind, Panzer Dragoon, Bruce Lee, Jet Set Radio Future, Soul Calibur 2, Murakamo, and Double Steal. (those are all from memory and I could do more)
Halo. its on computer, pay 50 bucks and you can get it. pay 300+75 and you can get it
Oddworld.its an ok game. not one of my favorite though
Unreal Championship. on computer and PS2
Gun Valkyrie.no clue what this is
Tony Hawk 3.on PS2 also
DOA3. graphics do look nice. but eh. all fighting games same. do super/impossible in real life move to win
Soul Calibur 2. also on PS2
Panzer Dragoon. damn sega. good game
i skiped a couple.beacuse i have no clue what they are. not trying to start flame war. i honestly could care les what system is better, i just want a good game to play me. and from what i have seen of the Xbox's games. they won't. guess i'll just have to wait and see what happends
Halo- on computer yes but the computer version won't be out for a long time while the Xbox will get it in November, also Xbox games are 50 bucks, not 75.
Oddworld- ok
Unreal Championship- Xbox exclusive, you're thinking of Unreal Tournament.
Gun Valkyrie- 3rd person shooter made by Smilebit
Tony Hawk 3- ok
DOA3- ok
Soul Calibur 2-ok
Panzer Dragoon- ok
Just wanted to correct a few things, but yeah, arguing games almost never works because it's based on personal preference. [ 09-30-2001: Message edited by: Motiak ]
I am happy with my PS2.. my brother gets to have my old PS1, and i still get to play my favorite PS games. I haven't found many titles that impress me yet.. I like Zone of Enders.. I own Ephemral Phantasia (first real RPG for the PS2.. time thing is annoying, especially when you don't know how to get to where you are supposed to be at such and such a time.) and Evergrace (um.. yah.. please god why did i waste money on this?) I will probably break down and buy Zone of Enders. I look forward to the final fantasy games coming out for the PS2. I admit, i need to get a better idea of what games are out there as well..
One other thing.. The Gord sayeth that the PS2 shall rule most mightily over all of the new consoles.
"What was I talking about again?"
"Before you respond with some ignorant drivel, please stop yourself."
While I don't necessarily shy away from games that have those things, their absence certainly isn't going to leave me wanting. Note that they're all absent from Metroid, and if you don't like Metroid, then you're some kind of pinko subversive who hates puppies and children and apple-pie. Gamecube's lineup at E3 offered at least 2 games that caught and held my attention, only to give it back after I asked very, very nicely. And there were others that grappled with it for a few minutes, at least.
What's more, there are a few 'adult'-ish titles coming out for GC, as I understand... on that topic, did anybody here ever play Perfect Dark on N64? Was it worth it? I could use a first-hand review, as I don't have the memory-expansion pak thing, and it required it to be played.
