My computer's been acting funny lately. It's been locking up at seemingly random intervals, but closer inspection reveals that the lockup occurs when I use an integrated program (IE, My Computer, etc.).

The program freezes, but I can use other programs, like AIM or mIRC. Sometimes I can get away with closing the program (if it's IE). But if explorer or My computer freezes, I gotta reboot.

It's not a virus. I've run virus scans every four hours for the last week. Is it just Win98 degrading on me, or is it my HD going?

I've checked the hardware, and it seems to be in good shape.

Should there be anything specific that I should look for? Should I reformat? Should I upgrade to Win2K or ME or XP(in a few weeks)?
Should monkeys fly out of my butt?

Info/insight would be appreciated. Thank you.

Personally, I would only use 2000 or XP. Which of those you want depends on a few things. First off, XP is basically 2000 with a pretty new interface and some other generally worthless upgrades. I don't think those are things worth spending money on. 2000 is going to be cheaper than XP, by how much I don't know, but if money is an issue (and you can't get a "backup" copy), you might want to go with 2000. Plus, if you buy one of the editions of XP that require product activiation, you won't be able to install it on multiple computers, unless it's somehow hacked. Some people claim that the interface will lower performance, but I doubt it will be noticeable if it does.

Of course, if you haven't formatted and reinstalled Windows 98 in a while, just doing that should make everything work fine again. I recommend upgrading to 2000 or XP just because they are superior OSs, but if you can't do that for some reason, formatting should be enough.

How long since a fresh Windows install?

Windows dorks itself up over time, so most experts I've read recommend a clean install every 18 months or so.

hmm, as far as i can remember.. computer programs don't age.. your recent problems must be due to some stupid thing or another.. patch patch patch, and if that don't fix it, reinstall windows and patch patch patch some more.

I installed it under 3 months ago. So I'm puzzled.

Hmmm...Im confused. I've never had any problems with 98 [which is an outright lie] but maybe you should try the re-install thing. It occurs to me that as the versions of windows get newer, they appeal more to the newbie user, and giving Power users and hackers (a different definition than 'I am l33t') less choices. And on a closing note : Yes, monkies should fly out your butt.
