I've a question. I know enchanters are liked for crack and mezzes, and a bunch of buffs and the like. Now, I'm wondering, is an enchanter a good choice for a character which would have an easy time finding groups, and being useful in them? Or should I go with the sure bet, a cleric?
...I really don't have to finish this statement, do I?
It doesn't really matter. Both are wanted equally. The only problem with those classes is you can only have one in a group. We had a group earlier with a 59 Rogue, 57 Rogue, and 55 Rogue. Stuff couldn't live long enough to even hurt the tank! =/
I'd go with Enchanter, personally, having played them both to 50+. Cleric is so friggen boring most of the time. At least you can get a LITTLE excitement as an Enchanter every now and then.
However, if things go right, which they so often do, you find this incredible, godlike power at your fingertips. You're the traffic light that tells critters when to go or stop. You can annoy the fuck out of something, then make them forget you did a thing and wander off wondering how it got it's ass beat. They're the absolute best for powerleveling, can PL a caster like you wouldn't beleive, and are in my opinion the single most fun class in the game. You've got tricks up your sleeve as a 'Chanter, faction is rarely a problem and you've got the potential to be damn, DAMN rich. They're just... fun to play.
Clerics are fun. On Luclin, for some reason, there's an on-again, off-again cleric shortage. I know in the highest levels, clerics are rare. My friend has a 52nd level cleric and the moment he logs in he starts getting tells from raid groups who need a cleric. Then everyone has clerics in the 30's to about 41, then there are like no clerics between 20-30, then there are clerics from 15-20, then no clerics from 10-15 (I have an 11th level cleric and soon as I log in most places I get tells. The Warrens were great because no one was there pestering me).
So you have to ask yourself HOW useful you want to be. Keep in mind clerics are often seen as a one-note character more than Druids. Most tanks would just as soon have you set yourself to /follow them and just do that and heal. Do things otherwise and people bitch bitch bitch. *shrugs* Then again I'm bitter about the whole thing, which is why most of my characters are men-at-arms, and my only caster-only character on my primary server (Luclin) is a mage.

Is Dark Elf (agnostic, of course) a good choice for an enchanter, even with the low (yet easily raisable) CHA?

As my brother would say, yes. When most people see high elf enchanters they think 'pretty' enchanter. However, Dark Elf enchanters take skill and hard work, instead of get cha up high and then feel you are done.

Dark Elves have the second highest int in the game. They also have Ultravision from level 1, not to mention Neriak is one of THE best places to get spells. Charisma isn't AS important as some people make it out to be.

An increasing number of Enchanters are abandoning Charisma entirely. I have personally grouped several times in the planes and various other raid situations with two of my guild's enchanters. One maintains 200 charisma and about 198 int. The other has forsaken charisma and only has around 100, but he has 200 int and the rest is resists.
I honestly notice no difference in competence between the two. [ 09-02-2001: Message edited by: Maradon? ]
Edit: Enchanters are fun. Dark Elves are a very nice race for enchanters, and being agnostic is recommended. And other freaks like me (Human-Karana, and I believe Skaw is the same... might be wrong) have a bit of a harder time getting into some cities. Too bad they nerfed the minor illusion. You used to be able to do a sequence of illusions w/jboots to make yourself run around in minor illusion. Imagine putting a staff of writhing on the ground, using minor illusion (turns you into the nearest object, which would be the staff) and walking around. Put levitate on and Voila! Instant newbie freak-out.
And my enchanter has LOTS of stuff he can switch around for resists/hp/mana. [ 09-02-2001: Message edited by: Soldar ]
Raid level
I heard enchanters were crack bitches more than ever on raids... And that Druids actually do something on then. I've been considering moving Kit to Zeb again.
Any high levels (Pesco? Snoota?) could enlighten me on this one?
Don't know about druids, don't pay attention to them.
I love choking things and then watching them run away and timing how long it takes them to die.
Or mezzing mobs and then emoting making funny faces at them, or flipping them off or such.
Enchies are such fun
