I just took my brother's account and am using it.
I don't really know much about Everquest, can I get some tips please?
Necromancer: How DARE you imply that I was involved in a rude act with my undead servant! I will flay the flesh from your bones! I will summon a thousand maggot-ridden corpses to gnaw your flesh! I will trap your soul in-

*cough*
First, remap your attack key to something you're not likely to hit in normal typing. Like.. say.. F-12

First day i played i was tryi to say something to someone and had a guard targeted and when i typed a he went kos on me and of course i didn't know what to do after i spawned again so i deleted like 10 characters that way... neat way to try out all the races/classes though...
Absolutely everything. Not to see if you can kill it, to see if it's gonna come after you. I don't know how many times I got my ass beat as a lowbie because I forgot to con something and magically discovered it was KOS (my exploration in Freeport comes to mind...).
Almost everything has value.
Don't destroy stuff. Save it. As a lowbie/newbie, save EVERYTHING. Until you can't hold more. Then sell. Money goes a long way. Get it. But don't beg, for the love of god don't beg.
Orcs are not your friends.
Be kind to the casters. The one you're laughing at 'cause they're getting their butt kicked today, may be the one who KSes you and cackles tomorrow.

As for the tips...
-Taunt taunt tauntity taunt. You'll want this skill to be as high as possible. As a Paladin, you'll sometimes be the main tank in pickup groups, ESPECIALLY at lower levels, since you have one of the best heals in the game- Lay Hands. If you can't taunt the monster onto you, it'll eat the casters, then it'll finish you and any other meleers off.
-Don't be afraid to die. You're supposed to take the hits. If you're looking to do big damage in close combat, while staying pretty much unharmed, play a Ranger.
-No matter how little damage you do, DEFENSE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN OFFENSE. THat's the reason you're a DEFENSIVE melee class. Always go for armor class, looks don't matter too much. Unless you're fighting a monster that uses powerful spells, in which case, learn what element the spells are, and get resistance gear for that element. As for keeping the monster on you, that's why you have taunt.
-Just because that bigass sword does 20 damage doesn't mean it's better than your 5 damage 20 delay sword. When buying weapons, look for weapons that have a lower delay, while still having a decent amount of damage.
-The reverse of the above tip goes for monsters with damage shields (where you get hurt every time you hit them.) Using a fast weapon against those is literally instant death. In that case, grab the biggest weapon you can use. Even better if it has a high delay and really high damage- you'll do the same damage, if not more damage than, a faster weapon, and will take less damage from the damage shield.
-Weapons are still important, and damage/delay really helps with taunting. When you feel you have enough armor class, it's time for a new weapon. Wizards aren't the only class in the game that's expected to do some amount of damage- the melee classes need to help out, too.
-Some shields are hard to get, but give quite a bit of AC. Since you're a Paladin, you'll definitely want these- You can't use two weapons. You wanna do that, play a ranger or a warrior, monk or rogue.
-Lay Hands is ALWAYS useful. It'll heal a little more than your maximum HP for the level, so if you're low on health and use it, it'll be a FULL recharge, without mana. THe only problem is, it takes a full EQ day (72 minutes) to recharge.
-Even though you have healing spells, and good ones at that, you are NOT the group's only healer. That's what Clerics are for. You're more for downtime healing, to save the clerics some mana, and healing the spellcasters and the cleric too. After all, why should a cleric waste lots of mana CHealing himself and let the Warrior die when the group's pally can heal him to almost full while HE heals the warrior?
-DO NOT TRY TO HEAL LARGE RACE WARRIORS IN BATTLE. You'll waste ALL your mana, only to hear them say, "Well, I gained half a bubble of HP". Unless you're using Lay Hands, let the cleric worry about them, as their heals are more powerful.
-Play the game how YOU want to play it (After all, it IS a game, right?), but don't go too far. You don't say an armorless Paladin with an ubersword is "unique in his/her inability to tank, and part of the diverse tapestry that is the Paladin experience", you say "He/She ain't gettin' in MY group". Apologies to whoever's quote I blatantly ripped off.
That's all I can think about for now.

I cannot TELL you how many paladins have wasted ALL of their mana casting minor healing on me, and going up 1/3 of a bubble.
Once i went into kelethin, and had activated my guise of the deceiver. The pre nerf kind *grin*
Well, the banker didnt like it. So, being stupid, I ran OFF of kelethin. Well, I was knocked unconcious, and had one purple bubble left before death. Somehow I stood up and had ONE hp, and got gate off before the banker got to me.
A fun thing to do: Get a lev ring from a mage, jump off wizzie spires, and activate it right before hitting the ground.
FUN!

Rangers can output great damage. Only problem is they cannot take hits for jack compared to other melee. That's the major beef people have with them

LoH doesn't heal mobs anymore (if it ever did - I started post-Kunark)... but it does burn for a day anyway!
I went with two handed weapons cos pre 50 they're you're best weapons by far. I did keep my 1h skill up with a ghoulbane though it wasn't near as good as my 2h weapon ( 15/34 procs dismiss undead vs 33/49 )
Oh yeah and about those wizard spires pft i could jump off 'em twice without haveing to heal and survive it. Wasn't nothing to a buff paladin
