I don't have any idea what it was like back then, but it sure looks sweet now.
Chainmail is a miniatures-based battle game. It incorporates several D&D 3rd Edition rules into combat (nerts to you, Kek! ). But primarily, it's all about the miniatures.
The setting is a world where armies are competing for the spear of the God of War. Each army differs. There's the standard Elf, Human, and Dwarven armies. But there's also a humanoid army led by a gnoll priest, as well as an undead army led by a fallen warlord (sounds like Mort!). Each army, each unit, each miniature has their own abilities and powers and strengths and weaknesses.
They've put up a lot of information about it at www.tsr.com , including shots of the newest miniatures, and an example of play. It's pretty sweet, I know I'll be giving it a try
The game itself looks pretty innovative though. [ 08-24-2001: Message edited by: Caalus ]

Actually there is already, and has been, one of these out for quite some time called "Mage Knight: Rebellion".
I have quite a few of them already, if I could take pictures I'd show you.
They are also collectables. With several expansion series.
I just got this one not to long ago in fact.
|Edit: Blah guess you can't link. Oh well it's the new Venemous Dragon. This game also got one of the highest gaming comunity review ratings.|

My first pack I opened of Mage Knight last night I pulled a $30 dollar unique Wraith Go me!
-They're using 3rd Ed. rules, which means I'd rather not learn an entirely new set for Mage Knight.
-I trust WoTC and support them.
-I like the premises of Chainmail.
-They're using miniatures which I like and am comfortable with.
-I don't trust products endorsed by Texans
Nerts to you!

Bite me!
They're fun, but buying the miniaturers will make you poor. Fast!
At least the Games Workshop ones.

I got mageknight when it came out (I have a friend that works at a WoTC store) i stopped playing when the WoTC store here started charging $10 a pack. and in my first 20 packs i had all the Draconum =P. Also, once again, down with D&D! up with Ironclaw!
Buy em online, they are still only 6$.
I prefer the Necropolis Sect. Bone Golem!

That's really true
The Games Workshop ones look great though.
And you get to show off your great painting skills
Mageknight is prepainted right?

Mageknight have a fairly crappy paintjob on them, good enough to play with, but if you do like your mini's looking spiffy, they pretty easy to paint.
I hope Chainmail has some room for creativity and uniqueness. [ 08-25-2001: Message edited by: Caalus ]
