CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australian couples owe it to their country to have more children and should get on with the job, the nation's treasurer said on Tuesday.

"You go home and do your patriotic duty tonight," Peter Costello said when asked by a journalist if he was "the family-friendly treasurer saying get out there and procreate."

go one step further by having extra children "for your country" to make up the gap left by friends who "aren't even replicating themselves," the Treasurer said.

12 != 24

I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl, we ate lobster, drank piƱa coladas. At sunset, we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over, and over?

Yeah, that's been an aspect of our government's social engineering policies for a number of years now. In ten years time the crux of the domestic issues in elections here will be aged care...

Family benefits in Mr. Costello's budget this year have been all "Heeey big spender." But that's not representitive, for it is an election year and the Libs are a bit nervous for Mr Howard's 4th term.
