My third Essay in English is on you. yes, you.

Evercrest, as a whole, is my topic.

However, I'm also going to delve into the world of message boards. I need you to tell me what you think about EC as a whole, what it has done for you, how it has effected you in the 4ish years it has been in existance.

How would your life change if it no longer existed?

Who have you met? Has it affected anything?

How have message boards in general effected you? How is your life different?

I need this soonish, k thx la~

^_^

*hug you all*

thanks!

The board is a source of information and help. With out it, I would have had many more troubles than I would with out it.

It is also a good place to unwind and relieve stress. It can also cheer you up if you are sad, or angry.

I have met no one on this board yet.

Generally Effect of the boards on me has...not been to terribly much, other than the constant urge spout out "bish" or "n00b".

I don't discriminate...I hate everyone.

How would my life change? I would spend the hour or so a week that I usually spend here somewhere else and probably be slightly irritated, then forget about it.

I met some cool people(not IRL) I can argue and disagree with because I don't have to live in the same house/town with them. I enjoy the time spent.

The messageboards have given me another source of entertainment during the times when I am bored and don't feel like playing video games. My life is a little more humorous, but not significantly different.

The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. Evercrest as a whole is too big a topic for an English essay.

What are the parameters of your assignment?

  1. How long is your essay?
  2. What is the purpose? Inform? Persuade? Literary style demonstration?
  3. When is it due?

You mentioned in another thread you wanted to improve your grade in English. Tell me about your assignment, and I'll help you put together the framework of a good essay.

You'll need not only to choose a narrow topic, but I highly recommend you do a topic sentence outline before you begin writing.

Evercrest like this, actually...

As a message board, how does it affect the members of said message board, how does it work, social dynamic, I suppose. I'm not sure yet.

It is 5-6 pages, due November 13th, and I'm guessing the demonstration thing. What kinds of things effect it, etc.

You've got plenty of time then--good.

PM me when you have an idea what you want to write, and I can help you with outlining and writing techniques.

A short essay like that is difficult to do well, because it's too short to take on a big topic, but just long enough to tempt you into wondering off the main thread.

As a planning factor, I'd break it out something like this:

Introduction--1/2 page
Point 1--1-1 1/2 pages
Point 2--1-1 1/2 pages
Point 3--1-2 pages
Conclusion--1/2 page

Further break each main point into a couple of sub-points, and you've got it wired.

Essay # 3: Assessing the Influence of Mass Media

Purpose: this third paper should provide practice in developing strong thesis statements and using detailed evidence to support arguements. Your primary challenge will be to present a ocused discussion within an area of discussion that is prone to overgeneralizations. I want you to work from the gorund up - to examine the influenece of mass media inductivly as you present a persuasisive anylasis of it's impact. We will continue to work on paragraph order and development, as well as the elimination of wordy or redundant phrases within sentences.

Background: We tend to speak of "the media" as though it is a singular entitiy. in fact, many forms of mass media are present in our daily lives, and particular elements of "the media" can speciafically examine 1) how particular individuals use media and 2) the nature of it's impact on thier lives. Think of the many media tools we use every day to inform or entertain: newspapers, magazines, radio stations, television channels (including cable and sattalite), films, articles, programs, advertisments, stories, newscasts, webpages, and other vehilces fill our time (and minds). It would be a mistake to see this flow of news, information, and entertainment as simply "good" or "bad" Obviously, context means a great deal when assessing the influence of mass media.

Writing Prompt: Describe and evaluate the influence of tha particular for of mass media on a specific individual or group. What conclusions about the operation of mass media in our lives can be drawn from this particular case?

... There ya go. That's all I have.

Bloodsage doesn't like English... Noo... not a bit...

heheh I *always* hated writing... Too confining a medium and very annoying to the way I work. I prefer something interactive... something that allows me to make sure the people I'm communicating with understand what I'm getting across as opposed to relying on them having similar mental processes to me.

For the social dynamic, you might find it helpful to look up Azrael's thread about member number as related to personality. It's called "Just something I've noticed" or something to that effect.

I'd find it for you, but I'm writing a paper of my own right now.

It's interesting not because it's completely accurate - the system used is too broad for that. It does, however, reflect some perceptions of what different groups of ECers will act like.

Sounds like you're on the right track.

Notice it said to work on thesis statements--you'll need a strong thesis statement to make this work.

Your evidence should also support your thesis, as well as address obvious counter-arguments.

Note, also, you are supposed to reason inductively: you should move from details to generalizations both overall and within each section.

It's my bed time now, but PM me when you've collected notes from people, and I'll help you put it together, if you want. There's a trick to outlining that will make it easy.

This place has me addicted. It has given me a sense of community that I haven't been able to find at home, or at school. If the boards weren't here right now, I'd probably be just playing a mindless game.

Tegadil, Alleria, and I plan to meet up sometime. This board has brought some people together. I could probably go farther in depth if we actually met.

The boards have made me a better person on many parts. I'm not afraid to talk to people anymore. Seeing understanding people willing to be friendly gave me a new vision of humanity. (Many of my classmates are drunks, and druggies. I needed someplace like here... I was just disappointed in people in general.)

The humor brought to me by these boards have also affected me a bit. Gave me a better sense of humor I suppose.

Hope that helps a little. I just got home from school, so I really don't feel like doing much.

In times past, EverCrest was a place that occupied my mind a lot. It's sort of like its very own society, as opposed to a messageboard.

It's given me an outlet for my humor and fury, though I do not use it for either exclusively. I've met people that broadened my horizons of what people are capable of, and it probably fine-tuned my ability to observe and classify people.

Nowadays, I treat it as messageboards were meant to be treated: a place to come by and hang out, without all sorts of tension and ire.

I would be really upset if it just up and disappeared one day.

Who have you met? Has it affected anything?

PescoPescoPesco and Azakias. Oh, and that Amber chick... The first two are SUPER SPIFFY!!! I don't think it's really affected a whole lot... except I'm never getting into the back seat of Amy's car again...

How have message boards in general effected you? How is your life different?

I think it made me 'come out of my shell' a bit. I am ALOT more likely to walk up to someone and introduce myself now, though I would still prefer not to. This time about two years ago, I used to almost have a panic attack whenever I got on the phone, but now it's alot easier. I am still quiet, though.

To me EC is a place to go for my social outlet. I have always been an "outsider" to the "society" of school, because in general not many people have shared interests with me. These people see me as anti-social, just because I don't like what they like. EC is a place where I can talk about games and Anime without being seen as some weirdo.

Then On top of this, I've moved to a new school in the middle of my high-school years, and now see many of my old friends once a month or less sometimes, but I still have all the people I know and am familiar with.

I would most likely be a no-name, quite and obscure figure in the back of the class room that no one knows about.

I have met only leckie in real life, but it hasn't really changed anything. The people that I have met just online that have really helped are Lazzay - for bringing out the zaniness of everything in me, Parce - for quite a lot, including my new interest in drama and my quite successful love life, Karnaj - for helping me bring my dick and fart jokes to a new level and being a great guy, and a whole host of other people (including Bloodsage) for helping me, whether they know it or not, in many other ways.

The boards have made me a much more outgoing guy. I'm a lot more cheerful. I have the boards to thank for shaping me, and giving me a lot of my mannerisms.

I have a 2-2.5 page double-spaced essay I'm finishing up now that was a bit of a pain to write because it was supposed to follow all the formal methods of writing that we've been given, but it easily flowed over 2 pages when any detail was included.

Luckily, my English teacher this year has a less strict attitude toward following all the formal methods. He goes for much more of "have it flow naturally and explain its purpose correctly" than the formulaic belief I've seen on the English department in the previous two years. In fact, I received a 5/9 on a timed writing recently. When I looked up a 5 on the rubric, it said that 5 is for papers that follow a formula and seem simple.
