Under capitalism, man exploits man. Under communism, it's just the opposite. - John Kenneth Galbraith

The one on the right is FEMALE!?
Did I just say that?
The idea of this bugs me though. Not because lesbian women wouldn't need men...but...When a father's sperm and a mother's egg mix, they've each got half the genetic material needed, right? they're MADE that way by the body.
Cutting someone else's genetic material in half sounds kinda dangerous. How are you sure all the necessary information on each half is present?

Nature did it the way it's supposed to be done for a reason.
This is a mistake.
I just think that it's dangerous. Yes we have the human genome mapped and we know where to look for certain traits...but without an exact map of each parent's DNA strand how would you know where to cut?
Pushing this into production in 18 months when they're just experimenting with creating viable embryos now...that seems waaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of it's time.

This particular procedure is a lot more complex than cloning, and should wait untill more has been done in this particular line of engineering, in my opinion.

Anyway the deal with cloning is that the cloning process in no way corrects the telomerase issue. To date I don't think there's any way to fix it. So if you clone someone who's 30, then even though the baby's a baby, the baby's likely got chromosomal traits of a 30 year old...meaning some defects may occur down the line.
In fact the only chromosomes in the body that don't show signs of chromosomal telomerase age are those in sperm and egg cells.
So if you've got two 30 year old mothers...even assuming you know where to cut the chromosomal line safely...you've still likely got 30 year old telomerase issues. This could cause all sorts of defects, or could potentially shorten the child's life by 30 years by causing the onset of "old age" traits like presbyopia (age-related vision problems), organ malfunctions, etc.
In fact telomerase age is one of those things that makes people wary of cloning in some circles, from what I understood. How would you like to start having age-related problems attributed to 60 year olds when you're 30?

Have males outlived their use?!

The only way, then, would be to reverse that process of telomerase aging... somehow?
Do I think it's a hideous perversion of nature? Yup. Because of this, I will abstain from participating in such a procedure. Or rather I would if I were even capable of undergoing such a procedure.
What the lesbiens of the world do, however, is none of my business.
If all goes well, they'll spawn legions of mutants that will threaten all of humanity and unite us in a joint effort to destroy them, inadvertantly bringing about world peace.
Is this the end of babies concieved through standard intercourse? Well, roughly 80% of the internet's content is pornography. What do you think?
As a side note, yes, those women are eye watering, gut wrenchingly ugly. [ 01-21-2002: Message edited by: Maradön? ]

I have a weird hunch that the people doing this know about a bajillion times more about this subject than you. That's why we call them "experts". Morally, I feel that this kind of procedure should be outlawed. That said, there's no doubt in my mind that the scientists who are researching this know exactly what they are doing...

"Well Ocy, this is either going to be extremely disturbing on many, many different levels, scar you for life, or make you laugh.. Maybe you should stay clear of it!"
So, of course, I opened the thread. I looked at the article, and then, to my surprise, read the whole damned thing in full. My mind was screaming at me the entire time to STOP, but me, being too tired to realize it, read it all.
I have but one thing to say to the entire thing.

okay, congratulations to Adele and Dawn for the possibility of being able to have their own kids...but that's kind of yucky. but then again, i'm just a freshman in high school/biology I. i just think it's ahead of its time, too.

"ur just a Freshman?"
You have no right to say, "just" to her, if you can't spell the word "you're".

Tell me, do you enjoy pounding your nuts into a trash compactor filled with rabid squirls and 'Fishers'?
I'm questioning the cutting of the genetic material at all. You've got an egg.. it has an "X" chromosome.. take the other egg, it has an "X" .. bingo you've got a baby girl. No need for cutting the material in half. You just can't produce a boy using two women, with Males being the ones that are the only source of "Y".
There was actually a series of sci-fi stories that I read in an evening college class last year about a whole socieity based on this. I'll have to find it's name again.
Besides.. when you've got scientists making glowing mice & trees and goats that squirt spider silk instead of milk, the "genetic purity" of mankind just seems kinda.. silly.
