The setting she shall be in a neolithic to early bronze age, set in a seemingly endless, untouched and wild world, ruled not by the Gods, but by the animistic Spirits.
I agree, more details would be nice
Trust me when I say you have enough players.
The first effect this has on the game, is classes, and the role they play.
The following classes do not yet exist in this period:
- Wizard. (For obvious reasons.)
- Cleric. (No Gods, no scripture, etc)
- Paladin. (See Cleric)
- Monk. (Advanced well beyond the neolithic peoples.)
The following new classes replace the above classes:
- Witch-doctor: Somewhere between an adept, a witch and a cleric. Divine magic with a small mix of the arcane, spirit possession and ritual sacrifice.
- Ancient Fighter: Modified from the Fighter class. Think Okonkwo from Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart.
The following PHB classes are more or less unchanged:
- Sorceror
- Barbarian
- Rogue
- Bard: As there is no writing, the Bard is the keeper of the oral tradition.
- Druid
- Ranger
Stay tuned!
A few cautions about the general concept as it sounds so far:
Greater Humanoid: Chalcolithic-Early Bronze age.
- Human
- Half-orc -Mix with either human tribes or orcish tribes
- Half-elf -Mix with human tribes
- Dwarf
- Halfling
- Orc
Lesser Humanoid: Mesolithic-Neolithic.
- Goblin
- Hobgoblin
- Catpeople
- Kobold
- Gnome
Fey: Spirit people, Unclassified
- Elf: Restricted to Druid or Ranger
- Other Fey by negotiation
Currency: None.
Trade is accomplished via commodities and items, with no medium of value. However, prices within the PHB still determine the relative value of items such as weapons, food, livestock, slaves, magic, womenfolk, etc.
Stay tuned. Pvednes fucked around with this message on 03-28-2005 at 10:03 AM.
Is there a language that operates like Common in standard rules, or is it just considered the Human language?

I claim Catpeople for me! No one else takes them or I stab you in the knees! ^.^

Playable Races:
[Warning: Tribes, Settlements, Wandering bands (parties), etc will be mostly racially homogenous. Except for slaves. Be warned.]

That said i could still see a clan of Humans/Half-Elves or Humans/Half-Orcs being reasonable.
-A goblin shaman that thinks his the next best thing after the greation of fire
or
-A Kobolt that invents and creat things WAY befor his time and they, A: dont work B: work yet explodes (even with the lack of and consumables) or C: work, it could revolusonise everything but this cards it because it's simply WAY to crazy ideas!
OH YEA! BLUFF BLUFF BLUFF!! BLUFF THE *Smashes lute on ogre.*
There, lets get on with it.
give me a level, and I will make her.
ps: I clicked the box.
(if you didnt know, I have to play a female in games as every time I play male the game crashes to hell and never gets off the ground. eg. Maradons campaign.) Y.O.T.C fucked around with this message on 03-29-2005 at 03:56 AM.
*also would like to note that you didnt mention if psions were in or out, as they dont suck and manage to be less overpowered now.*
Stay tuned.
One is a catperson ranger. He's conceptualized already from a previous game where I used him briefly. A fairly somber character overall, he's a practical survivor suited to the travelling life. This time around, he wouldn't have a language barrier.
The other idea is a halfling sorcerer (the concept would work as a half-elf or gnome, but works better as a halfling), with an almost kender-like interest things that flash or sparkle.

`Doc had this to say about John Romero:

Your first idea is dangerously close to my own, and thusly, you shall be strangled tonight with a length of yarn from my ball of yarn..once I get through playing with it! <pounces and bats at the ball, purring>
As for me, I think I'll play a Kobolt!
Smartest of them all, crazyest too, Master in the art of mixing stuff togetter! with results unexpected! Ahead of his time. Chaced away from his clan because he dared say the land was like a coconut (no no, he was Not chaced away because he blowed 1/2 the villige up, he will resent that!). This kobolt is to smart for his own good.
Travelling with his trusty old bore (that he use to carry stuff). This kobolt is ready to try anything and wants to run arond the world... because he know his life shorten with ever day he stays at one place.
his name you as? but TeandThea Whithseefor ... Naturaly ^_^
(rogue with alchimy and lot of lore)
quote:Odd, I never pictured you as the somber ty-ghp *cough*wheeze*

No worries. Two felines in the party may work well, but two feline rangers in the party would be a bit too homogeneous, unless we had shared elements in our histories (i.e. knew each other before the start of the adventure).
/me cleans Kats daggers
Share his loot? I'll give you catnip ^_^

For the time period, however, bronze chainmail would probably be very expensive... Hmm. Maybe a Barbarian would be a better choice for a Half-Orc.
quote:I could see a bronze breastplate being practical.
See, your Ruvyen means your hair. So technically it's true.

quote:Kitty! (*bearhugs katrinity*)
Katrinity is attacking the darkness!
Prehaps I shall be a feline rogue...<assassinates Doc>
Now, to pick a gender for the halfling. Hmm, that's a toughie. The character concept works either way. A guy would fit better into the society, and by my usual gender rotation, I'm due to play one. Yet a female would be so much cuter! I can't decide
I feel so... durty >.<

Ruvyen had this to say about Knight Rider:
I'm kind of interested in the Ancient Fighter class. I doubt, of course, I'd be able to wear plate mail armour unless my character actually invented plate mail, but bronze chainmail's good too. It will also allow me to fully use a 15DEX for dual-weilding.
Three words.
Early...Bronze...Age.
For reference, Greek Hoplites were Late Bronze Age.
In any case, when I get the time I'll detail out the Ancient Fighter and the Witch-doctor.

Possible interest in a Scout type ranger. Lots in the stealth skills etc.
Handaxe: A handheld block of shaped flint, which was used as an all-purpose tool; a hammer, a wedge, and as a flint core off of which microliths were chipped. (A microlith is a small stone tool, such as a microblade [a sharp flint chip], barbs for spears, arrowheads, etc.)
Spear: Either the heavy neanderthal vareity, or the superior but lighter Cro-Magnon spear.
Spear-thrower: Similar to the bow, this was present in all mesolithic peoples.
Simple bow: The bow was invented very early on in the mesolithic period, and were mostly constructed from Yew. They were surprisingly powerful, and required considerable strength to use effectively.
Club: A big chunk o' wood.
Other items: Whatever a man before any civilization could get his hands on that would function as a weapon. A big rock, perhaps, or a heavy animal jawbone.
Neolithic weapons: With the development of simple agriculture; and hence permanent settlements, there began a practice of raids, and the defense against them. Hence was developed a warrior code. Roads and the very simplest of fortifications begin in this time, as was the construction of megaliths. (Menhirs, dolmens, stone rows, stone circles, taulas, orthostats, etc.)
In addition to all mesolithic weapons:
Sling: The simple sheperd's sling. Very cheap and very portable.
Mace: An improvement on the club. Enjoyed a long period as the melee weapon of choice.
Staff: A big, long bit of wood.
Flint dagger: A big knife made of flint, with a handle of ash or yew. Is nonetheless very sharp.
Flint axe: A true axe, with a head of flint.
Composite bow: Made of bone or horn and yew, an improvement on the earlier version, except you have to be even stronger to use it.
Longbow: Like the mesolithic simple bow, only bigger.
Note: The late neolithic period opens the door for hardened hide/leather armour. This includes the breastplate, helmet, and hide shield. Simple wooden shields are also available.
Chalcolithic weapons: Now comes the advent of metal. Very soft metals, such as copper, tin, silver and gold are workable by these peoples. There are no alloys yet. Tools also improve in lock step with weapons.
In addition to the Neolithic weapons:
Copper knife: Slight improvement over the flint vareity, though it won't keep an edge.
Copper axe: As above.
Copper-headed spear: Significant improvement over the flint variety, in that it could be forged into very vicious shapes.
Early Bronze Age Weapons: Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, which is much harder than copper and other natural materials. It allows for superior metal tools and weapons to become practical and mainstream.
In addition or replacement to Neolithic-Chalcolithic weapons:
Bronze Spear
Bronze Short-sword
Bronze dagger
Bronze knife
Bronze mace
Bronze-tipped arrows
etc.
Note that considerable emphasis was placed on the piercing-slicing, because the advent of leather armour had ended the dominion of the mace.
Ritual weapons! Pvednes fucked around with this message on 12-18-2005 at 09:26 AM.
Obsidian dagger: A big shank of razor sharp black polished volcanic glass, as used by the Skull cult at Jericho!
Bone wand: When witch-doctors point the bone, they use this.
Garotte: More ritual sacrifice accessories
Golden weapons: See above!
etc
