Abilities: Stats are on the point buy system, but each point in an attribute only costs one point. All stats begin at 8, and you have 29 points to spread amoung them. So if you want to have an 18 in a stat, you'll spend 10 points.
Alignment: Good or Neutral. No outright evil characters, there are plenty of villians to go around for that.
Hit Points: Max at first level as normal, then roll the rest. If your roll is under half of that dice, then bump it up to half. So if a fighter rolls a d10 for hp and gets a 3, make it a 5 instead.
Equipment: Starting gold for purchasing equipment is 19,000 gold. You can purchase anything you want with this, including magical items, but on any magical weapons, you can not have more than a +1 enhancement on a weapon. +1 Flaming Swords of Wounding are fine, but not +3 Warhammers, etc.

Description:
Salkin is the bastard son of a merchant family. He is the progeny of a
wandering Elven bard who decided to stay at one of the inns at which
the elder Blackbrook and his daughter had to spend the night on a trip to the
capital. Elysia Blackbrook took a liking to this Elf and Salkin was the result.
The name is a result of the Elf having found out about the pregnancy and a brief
visit to Elysia. He made her promise that, should they have a son, his name
should be Salkin. He refused to say why.
Of course, the elder Blackbrook was furious with his daughter. He had hoped
to marry her off to a minor nobleman to increase his family's standing. None
would have her now. At first he wanted his daughter to see the local wise woman
for a way to abort the pregnancy. Elysia refused. Blackbrook gre even more
incensed and resolved to ignore his grandson from his birth and onwards. However,
Salkin always seemed to get in the way and was always around wherever Blackbrook
looked. As he grew older it grew harder and harder to ignore him and the decision
was made to send him to a boarding school far away. Elysia was loath to give
him up but had no choice in the matter.
Salkin did not do badly at school but also not particularly well. His imagination
was a refuge much of the time and so his studies suffered slightly. His innate
intelligence and wit were enough to carry him through. Though not strong, he was
reasonably tough and so did not do too badly in the various scrapes which happen
in such places.
The turning point came in a history lesson. Bored one day, he decided to read
some of the more interesting parts of the textbook, ignoring the Master lecturing
at the front. His imagination was caught by the battle of Cobalt Ridge against
the Uthgarth barbarians and he felt he could almost smell the blood and hear the
sounds of battle. A scream of fear in his ear broke his reverie and the spell broke.
All around him his fellow students stared in fear and even the intractable Master
of History was looking daunted.
He decided to find out what had happened. This led him to the improvement of his
native skill in magic. That was the day he found out he was a sorcerer.
