Finally figured out the damm friends list thing. I sent a test message to Fal to see if it works. Basically, you need to go to "navigator", then then "friends list", then on "friend search" (the magnifying glass). Once there click over twice on the right arrow next to "profile search". Enter in the character name from the other thread and Ragnarok as the world. Click on "search", and then "send message." Can't actually edit the message, so it'll sound stupid to whomever gets it. They just have to accept, and boom. You should be able to see when they come online in-game then.

Dealing with this thing only furthers my belief that FFXI has the most counterintuitive UI I've ever seen. Now I only hope that this wasn't figured out before and nobody wanted me as a friend, so I don't look like a complete pathetic idiot. *mumbles*

There is a way to do it while in the game. My friend somehow sent me a message, I clicked on it, then clicked "Accept and add".

For the life of me .. I can't figure out how he did it. And we still see each other as offline on the list too.

The viewer is cool in its respects .. but holy crap its all so confusing!

I demand "/friend Name"!!

Looking at it again, I think its possible to do it through the search interface. Use /sea all <name> to find someone. Once you have the name, click on it and hit message. Prolly has some way to do it from there. Too lazy and tired to log back in and try it right now though.

And the online thing seems buggy. Firts off, you have to set yourself to online as you are invisible by default. Go to online status in the friends list to do that. Then you may need to log in/out for it to register. It will say the zone name the person is in, unless you're in the same zone. Then it'll just say the server name.
