I couldn't use the mouse till I rebooted, but for an added bonus it locked all other forms of input... the game would run fine, I could watch as that Recon rammed a goodyear down my throat... but had no way to stop
It took 2 days for me to throw the damned thing in the closest and get a trusty ball-mouse
Now besides the occasional cleaning (Go max Payne mousepad! woo!) it works like a charm
In closing

the first optical mouse I got was some generic brand. It had this habbit of just moving the pointer everywhere and clicking on things at random uncontrollably. Is caused me to sit down and camp out of EQ once, lol. I took it back, got a logitech, and it never happened again. I LOVE my optical mouse. less resistence, doesn't need cleaning, doesn't get stuck cause the ball gains TOO much traction. mmm...good mousey!
First optical mouse I ever used was one of the SUN optical mice from SUN3 and SUN4 workstations back in 1991.
Annoying as hell. You HAD to keep them on the little metalic mousepads, plus they seemed to go everywhere EXCEPT where you wanted em to go.
Not really been tempted to use one since, even though I'm sure they've improved since then.

Improved?! THAT'S an understatement
Today's optical mouses work on any surface. They're precise, and when you're doing slow, precise movements like drawing, the ball can't get stuck and force you to jerk. it's awesome. Just make sure you get a brand you can trust.
Not only is it optical, but it's twice as accurate as the most accurate possible ball mouse, and has FIVE count 'em FIVE buttons (not including the mousewheel).
Furthermore, I've had it for nearly a year now and I've never, ever had a problem with it - and that's saying a lot (I have a bad habit of taking out frustration on my user interface).
Couldn't get me to touch a ball mouse for my life
hehe, my mouse is uber
