Not really. Tenchi is pretty cool for a while, the first series anyway.

Rent Records of the Lodoss War instead.

"Tenchi in Tokyo" originally called "Shin Tenchi" (or "New Tenchi") is the worst of the three. It has a weird art style, Sakuya's a bizatch, and the story is kinda funny. I would recommend NOT watching it. The dub should be airing on Cartoon Network tomorrow though.

I haven't been too impressed with Tenshi in any form, but I'll also state that I haven't seen much of it due to limited time when I had access to some VHS tapes from a friend....

From what I've been told, it's roughly a cornerstone of a ton of 'in-jokes' in other anime and is amusing to watch if you're not expecting something good (Same thing applies to Battlefield Earth. Good SFX... craptacular movie)

Um... it's actually quite good. Just please do not watch Shin Tenchi! It will ruin your views on Tenchi, like the Pokemon anime damages the outlook of the original gameboy game.

It's really off-the-wall weird compared to the OVA and the first series. I agree with Faz, it's the weakest of the three, but I like Tenchi, and it's still better than a lot of stuff out there. Rent the first few episodes before you buy...

Personally, while I liked the original OAV series of Tenchi Muyo, and some of the first TV series, Tenchi in Tokyo just isn't that great, and I've been following the series from the beginning (before it was even available in English or with subtitles ). It all starts out funny, but Tenchi quickly falls into that "hi, I'm a total dork and even though I have hordes of women swooning all over me I fear them and have schoolwork to do", to the point where you just want to either club him over the head with a large stick or send him to the hospital to make sure he's not in need of some testosterone shots .
I like the artstyle in all of them, personally : I'm a fan of El Hazard and it's the same animator for Tenchi in Tokyo, it's just different and not easy to get used to is all. It's the storyline and Tenchi's perpetual stupidity that bugs me is all. If he was a REAL man he'd have sowed his teenage oats until his skull exploded, not gone around whining and saying "Hey, what are you doing taking all your clothes off and trying to force me to have sex with you, Ryouko? Get dressed, we have house chores to do and then later I have to study for a math test"

Actully from what few episodes i have seen, there are refrences to El Hazard in Tenchi in tyoko, i rember tenchi falling down a hole or something and one of the classmates sayinf something about it

Well from my perspective... all those girls can't hit on Tenchi worth shizzat. Like Ryoko, she just comes by and fondles all over Tenchi. Wtf? Whatever, then Ayeka does some polite deed or outwits Ryoko and she thinks she has instantly won Tenchi. *Remembers second to last scene in There's Something About Mary.* "I have an idea, how about none of us leave until Mary, here, stops jerking us around, and tells us who she wants?" Lol, it's basically like that. But anyway, the art in Shin Tenchi follows this pattern: Small hands, large-armed sleeves, misshapen eyes with black lines 5 feet thick around the irises, and everyone is about 9 feet tall. But one good thing is that Amagasaki is practically the main character.
