I was very, very wrong.
I know very few of you are metal fans, and even then most of you probably aren't terribly fond of Dream Theater for one reason or another. I don't care. This album is absolutely amazing, and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys listening to absurdly talented musicians doing their thing. This album is a fucking masterpiece as far as I am concerned.
I posted two songs in the MP3 thread as a sample, but don't be fooled! Unlike their previous studio release, this album is not the same style throughout. Track 4 is heavily inspired by U2. Track 6 supposedly sounds a lot like a band called Muse. There are some Dark Side of the Moon elements to the title track, etc.
The bass is audible again in this album! The keyboards are fucking amazing, especially with Jordan's use of the Continuum Fingerboard. Petrucci's guitar is not as over the top as the last album, but it is still incredible. The drum work is top-notch, as usual. James LaBrie's vocals are absolutely perfect. blah blah etc i'm a fanboy
I could not be more satisfied with this release. 5/5. Kegwen fucked around with this message on 06-07-2005 at 11:57 PM.
edit: Muse is awesome. Ctrl-Alt-Del fucked around with this message on 06-08-2005 at 12:04 AM.
It goes like this:
1) Scenes from a Memory
2) Octovarium
3) Disc 1 of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance
[edit: this is not to suggest that I actually dislike anything by Dream Theater, mind you Maradon! fucked around with this message on 06-08-2005 at 12:09 AM.

Wow, a metal band that uses keyboards? Awesome o.o I wish all bands had keyboards! (honestly!)
I may get yelled at for this, but I'd say he's easily the best keyboardist in the rock/metal/etc arena. Absolutely amazing musician and, from what I've heard, a great guy as well.
I looooves me some Jordan Rudess.

I would like to see anyone contest the skill of Rudess vs ______, he was trained at Juilliard for fooks sake.

You don't listen to a whole lot of metal. Off the top of my head, bands that use keyboards:
Children of Bodom
Strapping Young Lad
Cradle of Filth (...despite sucking)
Dragonforce
Nightwish
...etc.
On topic, I heartily agree with everything Kegwen said. Damn good album.

Not really, considering the fact that I spend almost all my money on manga and, as a result, most of my music exposure comes from the radio. There aren't any metal radio stations around here that I can find (re: that my defective car radio can find), either. I like what I do hear, though!
Edit: But it's not so in this album. Noxhil2 fucked around with this message on 06-08-2005 at 03:17 AM.

In the past some of the keyboarding has been a tad cheesy.Edit: But it's not so in this album.
I loves me some cheesy keyboarding, though. As long as it's still good. Ayreon is guilty of cheesy keyboards throughout (as well as cheesy lyrics for a cheesy concept album), and I still love them.

My second favorite Dream Theater album so far.It goes like this:
1) Scenes from a Memory
2) Octovarium
3) Disc 1 of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance
[edit: this is not to suggest that I actually dislike anything by Dream Theater, mind you
Scenes From a Memory is definitely my favorite of thier set.
Don't have Octovarium, but I echo Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance as well.
On the best keyboardist thing, Rudess is definitely among the best, and probably one of THE best original keyboardists. I'd say Styx and Nightwish are up there as well, but in a different way.
Drums are still rulled by Neil Peart.
Dreame Theaters biggest appeal for me is the vocals at any rate.
Now, I have some questions. As I stated before, Scenes from a Memory is my favorite by far, and I sampled the MP3s you put up and noticed they were a bit back to oldschool in a lot of ways (Just the samples you put up mind you.) So my question is, is the whole CD along the harder lines? Not that this is a problem mind you, they do it well, but concidering Scenes from a Memory is my favorite you can probably tell which of thier style sets I prefer more.
So is at all orchestrated anywhere? If so how much of it, does he get the real soft vocals going at any point (Man if I were gay his slow voice would kill me)? Any sentimentality songs or the likes, or is more of a power album?
Thanks.
Also I'm kinda peeved. My Liquid Tension Experiment II CD bugged out on me in the car. Faelynn LeAndris fucked around with this message on 06-14-2005 at 02:35 PM.
But yeah, it's mostly pretty hard. It has orchestrated moments, which I assume are done by Jordan's keyboard, but yeah. Kegwen fucked around with this message on 06-14-2005 at 07:52 PM.

Scenes from a Memory kinda alternated, Train of Thought was all very hard and very dark, Octovarium alternates like Scenes from a Memory, but is still in general a bit darker than Scenes from a Memory.

I guess you must be a death-metal-purist then, as I can't really see anyone not liking Answer Lies Within unless they're the type of person who changes the radio station in disgust whenever they play "Under the Bridge" by red hot chili peppers.

Actually I'm an aficionado of Classic Rock. Track 2 is very boring imo

Judging from her profile, she appears to be an extremely attractive girl as well. This does not bode well - everybody knows there are no girls on the internet!
