So, few of you had any answers to my question in the Merits of Sex thread a posted a few days ago, but you had tons of advice to get out and do stuff. The question here is, where would I go?

Bearing in mind that I'm not too comfortable with large, impersonal crowds (like rave/concert sized and distributed; I don't mind large numbers of people if they're not tightly packed together) and I hate senselessly loud music, where would I go to find members of the opposite sex with whom I may pass the time and some conversation? I live within 20 minutes of downtown San Diego and the beach is there (obviously) along with any number of other things, so there aren't too many limitations on venue beyond the aforementioned.

Concerts and stuff really aren't all that bad. Just don't go alone, ever. That's just boring. No good.

Going anywhere is good for meeting people, just so long as you get out of the house. Seriously.

You can't meet anybody holed up in your room thinking about where you'd like to be meeting people...

This is the problem I run into: people telling me I should "get out of the house" but lacking any idea where to go or what to do. Having lived most of my life in back country and having virtually no social life the entire time, I haven't the slightest idea of what to do with myself outside my house. Combine that with friends who are mostly lazy or unmotivated and it doesn't leave much.

Cafes, Coffee Shops, Art Houses, Bookstores. . .places like those, and bring a book that can act as conversation material; a reason for someone to start up a conversation with you.

You may want to try gaming shops of any sort--there are female patrons every so often. Don't be intrusive about what they're doing, but if you notice them perusing something that you've some experience, knowledge, or interest with, of, or in, then go and strike up conversation with them about it.

p.s. gj on making an effort to get out more. gj.

Ok, instead of trying to find something to do for the sake of meeting people, name what you are interested. Then we can try to name activities that will both be fun, and will allow you to meet people with similar interests which helps in establishing a relationship.

So, tell us more about what interests you. Music? Dance? Art? Movies? Food? Name it.

Look, it's just an excuse. I know, because I used to be just like you. People can sit here and tell you over and over where to go and what to do, but you won't listen until you decide yourself to do it. That's what I'm saying: don't ask us, because we don't know what you want to do. Just go out and do it. Anyplace is better than home.

My friend tried to get this through my head for two years before I finally got it. It's all about comfort zones. You're comfortable at home, so you have no desire to go out and socialize. You aren't going to get anywhere with that kind of attitude. You have no social life because you don't go out. Frankly, you've just got to suck it up and go. I mean it.

Seriously.. I walked into a comic store near here when a warhammer tournament was going on. They all stopped and stared at me, except for the owner who knew me. It was scary... I had to walk by all of the staring faces or pre-puberty males to feed my old manga addiction.

Go to the library, go to the gym, community centre, art centre, philosopher's school, go to bars, nightclubs, whatever. The point is, get out and talk to people. Take some classes. The where really doesn't matter.

Even a shopping centre or grocery store is all good.

Try not to forget that socializing is a skill just like anything else. You have to start small. Just go to a public area and chill out. Walk around, take it all in, get a feel for the people. Just take it slow. If you expect to be a social butterfly after years of isolation, you're in for a rude awakening.

For me (it may not help you at all), I found it helpful to go out with a stranger and one mutual friend and find something fun to do. Something all three of you can enjoy so nobody is left out. It's a good way to start conversation with somebody you don't know. This helps you in two ways: one, you're making a new friend, and two, you learn how to carry a conversation with somebody you don't know. Both help you expand your social network. That's probably the best start you can get. Or, it was for me.

Still, the most important thing is getting out of the house.

Getting drunk will produce the same results. In my experience, people who are usually very shy/quiet, become EXTREMELY loud and sociable once that alchohol begins its run through their system.

Interests? I'm a fucking socially inept gamer who reads books. The issue here lies in having no idea at all where to do. It often happens taht I want to go do something but I haven't the slightest idea where to go or what to do. Anything is good, I just need some ideas. Noni, give me a call sometime when you're not at work/busy and we'll discuss.

I dunno about that one. The people at the games tend to be sports enthusiasts of one form or another and I'm just not interested in sports. Not to say every person there will be such, but events draw people who are interested in them. *ponders* There's some hot women in fencing...that might be a decent idea.

College marked little change for me beyond more autonomy. I still hang with a largely homogenous group of friends and sit at home doing nothing much. Perhaps once I transfer to a four year and get out on my own or into the dorms or some such it'll change things.
