Will this do more harm than good?

Yeah, that didn't work in Jurassic Park, what makes them think it's gonna work in real life?

Because if you saw it in a movie, it has to be true!
As a moot side note, it didn't work in Jurrasic Park because they filled in missing dinosaur DNA with that of frogs which had the ability to breed aesexually. Even if you DO think the movie is at all relevant, it isn't applicable here.

However, my real thought on the subject is that these scientists are just manifesting their own lack of sex life onto these fish in some kind of weird, transferance thingy. If they could just get laid, then they'd realize that they just need to get stinking drunk and go gernade fishing, like normal people. That'll get 'em.

Actually, they don't asexually reproduce. The males become females spontaneously.
..
That'd be interesting, wouldn't it? "Fuck! I think I'm pregnant! .. *grunts* Phew. Penis time!"

...................................WHAT?!!
In any case, this is a sound way of controlling the population of carp, for two reasons. The first, is that there is no way for these fish to get back to europe and decimate native populations. The second, is there is no way for the modifications to jump species.
Distinct thumbs up here.
ps. Jurassic Park is not an authority on biotechnology.

Alaan had this to say about Robocop:
As we have learned in the past, it is nigh impossible to undo what has been done. Even if they kill of the carp the original eco-system there will never return.
Actually the original species remain, but are endangered by the carp. Wiping out the carp will leave an ENORMOUS empty niche for them to reclaim.

Also, that killer bees being created by man thing.. is that real or just a roomer?
edit: Yes, I know for it to technicly be a species two creatures have to be able to have kids. More importantly, their children have to be able to have children. [ 02-09-2004: Message edited by: diadem ]

Cross-species fertilizations like the Liger do not occur in the wild. While it's not impossible, it's extremely unlikely, because even in the closest species, (Note: panthera leo, panthera tigris) there is only the slightest overlap, and are reproductively isolated from eachother. (imagine being forced to mate with a chimpanzee. Yeah, that's how the tiger feels.) That being said, don't fish spawn? they're likely more mechanically isolated than most for that reason. Can't be having hybrids all over the place, it's not an advantageous trait. For that matter the european carp is the only member of genus cyprinus in the Murray-Darling basin. So no, no hybridization would be happening there. As for killer bees, ask the Cigarette-Smoking Maradon, he's behind that particular conspiracy.

The cross-species thing makes sense.
As for the killer bee thing, thanks. Heard about that from a friend, who wasn't sure about it. I couldn't find any text on it, nor did I hear anything about it in bio class. That's why I asked... I knew it was possible but didn't see any supporting evidence. Was hoping someone would know. Guess that answers my question.
Now for an other question - how come the terminator fish only attack certain species? Why won't they attack the species they intend to save after they finish elminating the others?
Anyways, the Killer bees were imported to South America from western Africa. It was an uncontroled experiment that went horribally wrong. thus they now cover most of the Americas, except for Chile, Alaska, and the Northern Territories.
But, the two breeds ended up producing the African Killer Bee by some fluke, which were accidently released and spread like wildfire, being superior to every other species of bee alive
Funny fact, if an animal, say a pig, disturbs a killer bee nest, they swarm out and kill it, but continue to attack, on sight, any other pigs that happen near the hive for upwards of a week afterwards.
Read a bunch of articles on them before, the freezing temperature experiment was cool. All the bees swarmed up and covered the queen like a giant living hive, and the corpses of the outside bees kept the interior warm, and the queen feeds off the ones closest to her to survive, and when the season changes, she emerges and starts breeding again.
