I use the 'enter' key to jump in nearly every game I play. It's what I'm used to and it's how I like it (No 'WASD si bettar' crap, I like the way I play and I ain't changing just 'cuz other people like WASD or whatever better).
HALO locks the enter key. It messes me up big-time. Every other game I play doesn't lock it, but Halo just HAS to lock the one damn key I need.
So I'm thinking of a workaround - most games have a keybinds file that can be manually edited. I'll just edit mine... except I can't find it!
Anyone here know where it is or how to work around this issue?
Maybe Gamefaqs can help. Or something.

It's really not that hard to get used to. [ 10-04-2003: Message edited by: Maradon! ]
Jedi Academy let me bind it.
Unreal 1, 2, Tournament, and Tournament 2003 let me bind it.
Quake 1, 2, and 3 let me bind it.
Tribes let me bind it.
Planetside let me bind it.
Tron 2.0 let me bind it.
Jedi Outcast let me bind it.
NOLF 1 and NOLF 2 both let me bind it.
Renegade let me bind it.
BF1942 let me bind it.
Serious Sam 1 and 2 let me bind it.
BUT HALO WILL NOT LET ME BIND IT
Clearly, Halo is an inferior game.
And screw WASD. I happen to like the way my keyboard layout is. It works and it's comfortable for my hands. It works with every DECENT game out there. So why change?

That's what everyone except the reviewers are saying.

Usually I do Enter for jump, right shift for crouch, and ctrl for walk. When I don't use enter, I get confused and hit Right-shift for crouch and end up jumping =/

I use ctrl for jumps and 0 numkey for crouch, you could try that.
Maybe I just have small hands, but jeez that's awkward.
Carpal tunnel syndrome ahoy.
My setup works really well, when the game lets me use it, and almost no games disallow changing a bind like 'ENTER' to be jump... Halo is the first in a long, long time that hasn't let me use Enter.

Yeah it's a pretty strange game overall, performance wise it's not too great, apparently the net code really sucks, Gearbox just didn't put enough effort into porting it. From what I read on message forums, Gearbox stated they only worked on Halo for 9 months.

I work it like this:
upkey - forward
leftkey - sidestep left
rightkey - sidestep right
downkey - backward
ctrl - jump
Rshift - turn left
Num1/end - turn right
Num0/ins - crouch
Delete - Use
End - Reload
Pagedwn - Binocs/map
num4 - misc
This keeps it so I can control all my movements and functions and aim with out much hassle. I also HATE the WASD set up...

Maradon, if it works, what's the point?
Completely avoiding your current issue, for one.
If you're right handed, it's easier to use wasd (I think) because your hands stay far apart, and your dominant hand (Right) stays on the mouse, where it's used to it.
Vice versa for lefties.
If Khyron is right handed, he's a fucking freak. And Cysa, I could bind those very same commands, but in less then half the reaching space of what you have it currently set to with WASD.
Just saying.

An issue which appears with a single game, which every other FPS recently released doesn't encounter. Therefor, yes, I blame the game, seeing as how all the GOOD ones out there don't restrict its use.

The big question is: Are the people using arrow keys left or right handed? If you're right handed, it's easier to use wasd (I think) because your hands stay far apart, and your dominant hand (Right) stays on the mouse, where it's used to it.

This is true. I guess it's just hard for me to accept because I've always used my mouse on the right side of my keyboard like a good little boy (technically, though, I am left handed...I use different hands for everything though, it's weird). Even so, the arrow keys are tough on the hands. It hurts for me to use them like that.
I suppose it depends on the keyboard, too. [ 10-05-2003: Message edited by: Suddar ]

You blame the game for your inability to adapt to a keyboard layout that works with it?
The fact that you've even dedicated this much concern to the issue is absurd - if you'd dedicate half the effort you've spent on changing the binding to learning a new layout, you'd have it done by now. You'd also be one step closer to being able to play any game out of the box without wasting a single second on personalizing the key bindings.

Whereas I'd be learning new bindings, trying to adapt to something I'm completely not used to, in lieu of keeping to what I'm used to. What I use works, and it works well for me : I get more than a few kills in the multiplayer games I play, and I do respectably well. Sometimes I get 'OMGUBERGREATKILLS' on a map, sometimes I don't. But I definitely do well enough.
Do I want to play Halo? Yes. If there's no workaround, though, I will not play it. One game alone is not enough to make me want to change the entire way I play my FPS games.
Which brings us back to the point of this thread - finding that workaround. I don't CARE if you think that WASD is the holy way, the one and only way, the true what, whatever other bullshit you say. You can sit there and preach to me about WASD until you're blue in the face, but that doesn't mean I'm magically going to see some light that makes it better - Perhaps for someone else, it is better. For me, my way is better, and I want to know how to do it my way. If I can't, then screw Halo.
Then when you're in a real bind and need to jump you can go~! "Quick! slam!" jump! aha!" without having to go "oh.. need to strrreetch the finger ooooover to the enter key"

None of which can be attributed to your keyboard layout.

Exactly, so why should I switch? What I have works, and it's what I'm familiar with. It's what I'm comfortable using.
I have 5 mouse buttons (Fire, Alt-fire, reload, etc), the scroll wheel, enter for jump, shift for crouch, CTRL for walk, arrow keys to move, and INS/KP_0 for use.
It works fine for my games. I play well with it. It's both familiar, and comfortable, for me. Halo is the ONLY game that I have problems with. Would I like to play it? Yes. Is it a good enough game that I shall sit here and grow familiar with a completely new set of keybinds? No.
